It's a long road to write a book, but I got word that, assuming the production goes as planned, Move Slowly and Build Bridges, my book about Mastodon and the ActivityPub-based fediverse, will be out from Oxford UP around August of next year!

Still a lot of work to do behind the scenes: editing, proofing, indexing. But I'm already giving book talks and would be happy to do so if you want me to visit your class/university to talk about the fediverse!

@bookstodon Things have changed slightly since this post, but if you want a basic overview of the book, see https://fossacademic.tech/2024/02/11/Move-Slowy-Preview.html

@rwg @bookstodon I hope we can talk sometime. I want to learn about the logic of #Fediverse as an analogy/example for #OpenScience

@rwg @mtechman @bookstodon I find this fascinating. In the heyday of computer book publishing (which is when I wrote for a living) time was of the essence. I’d work closely with my main publisher (Peachpit Press) to get books out quickly. I would write in the page layout app and send them finish pages for editing. I’d incorporate their edits and send them a final PDF of the book. The book would be available in print in bookstores in 3 to 4 weeks. (1/2)

I think the timelines for humanities books have always been slower, because, unlike computer books, they are meant to have a longer shelf life and aren't beholden to rapid changes in tech.
Which is tough because... I mostly write about technology in my scholarship!

@rwg @mtechman @bookstodon I was lucky if my books lasted longer than a year. That’s why I had to keep writing them.
