Over on Bluesky, @pixelfed is trending because Meta is actively blocking links to Pixelfed servers.

@pixelfed oops, @eilah_tan beat me to it!

and @aram
I think this validates a point I saw @atomicpoet make a while back -- it's not just Twitter-like stuff that can grow on the fediverse, but other types of social media can grow when tech CEOs make major missteps. That's the big advantage of ActivityPub -- it can handle a big range of social media activities.

@rwg @pixelfed everyone knows that you just quietly suppress those posts and tell your call center staff that you never suppressed them right? You don't tell people that you are censoring their posts for linking to competitors or being on a topic the CEO declared verbotten, that is why the Devil invented shadowbanning.
-
right! there's a right way to suppress and a stupid way.
-
@rwg what is next, Google admitting it downranked blogs and small media companies because big media is big Ad Spend and its easier to pick a few Trusted Authorities than deal with the anarchy of the indy web? (Classic imperial praxis BTW) Instagram admitting it wants sexy influencers but not too sexy?
Are there no Communications Departments to issue non-denial denials? Are there no Legal Departments to write slippery Terms of Service?
-
@bookandswordblog heh, there are plenty of PR folks who would probably have advocated a more supple approach

@rwg @pixelfed @aram @atomicpoet exactly! The same happened with Lemmy when Reddit restricted access to its API. Curious if any TikTokers might find their way to Loops, haven't tried it myself.

I would almost say AoIR ought to run a Pixelfed (or Loops) server for members. AoIR members who sign up for either would still have access to folks on the Mastodon server and vice-versa. Really, the major thing that changes is what media is emphasized (text versus images).
-
@rwg @eilah_tan @pixelfed love that idea
