Have you ever personally been on the receiving end of an internet harassment campaign?
(personally here meaning “you, specifically; or a small group containing you”)
-
If you answered yes to the first question:
Did you have nightmares about it?
-
If you answered yes to the first question:
Did it change the way you interact with people on the internet or in real life?
-
@erincandescent how many people in a campaign?
-
@kolya I don’t think there’s a fixed number; it can be just one person doing the actual harassment if other people listen to them

@erincandescent voted "yes" but others have been through substantially worse - our times through the wringer have been fairly short (hours or days, not weeks or months or years), and they were on fedi, so we had mods that were willing to ban the offenders

@packbat The time it happened to me on here, it was by the users & admins of a handful of instances
Which are still fairly widely federated, even among servers that consider themselves well moderated.
And though it happened years ago and we mutually defederated, the people responsible still brought it back up and started spreading the rumours again when I had 5 minutes of fame earlier this year.

@erincandescent ...I don't think we've had five minutes of fame since we were targeted so, ugh, good to know that we might have that to look forward to.
genuine sympathies. this is wretched.

@packbat I’m moderately thankful that the people responsible had started posting all sorts of conspiracy theories about the War in Ukraine a few months prior to deciding to go after us, because the blocks that resulted from that vastly reduced their ability to spread their nonsense
These days they’re still being awful but at least they’re largely contained in their corner. There was no real consequence of the 5 minutes of fame; just some shitty things said by people who nobody really listens to any more.
