I guess under capitalism, there's no feasible way for a social media site to sustain itself financially without being user hostile. I mean, most fediverse servers aren't financially sustainable either, they're self-hosted at a loss

@JosJuice Lots of things run at a loss, or on subsidy. I’m not sure that’s by itself unsustainable.
Honestly from experience the human investment is much harder than the monetary investment.

Small losses spread across many people are often just called “donations” or “tax”.
