“When your friends and your principles come into conflict, which do you pick?”
So much of human conflict & dynamics can be understood through this lens.

Of course always picking principles can result in you clinging to ridiculous, outdated ideas alone
But always picking friends is how cults form
-
@erincandescent cults _do_ exploit your principles to alienate you from your friends
-
@whitequark people trying to indoctrinate you into a cult will also be your best friends
and then when they violate your principles, you’ll have nobody but them to turn to
-
@erincandescent how can you call a friend someone who puts your principles into question?
-
@efi sometimes your principles are wrong.
being able to reflect on when that is is one of the most critical things in life.
-
@erincandescent yes, but I don't think someone can stay a friend if the principles are at odds
if you have to choose, choosing both is a recipe for disaster
either they're not a friend or you change your principles, otherwise you have an enemy as a friend?? -
@efi I think in a healthy relationship you can have differences in principles and remain friends. What those particular principles are matters, of couese, and it might place distance between you
