That strangeobject.space is shutting down is sad, but not surprising to me. A lot of what is said by @esther in particular really resonates with me. Especially this bit:
“I’ve been anxious for months now that, if I speak up about the aforementioned incident, our entire server could get defederated.”
I never had a particular incident to speak of; and yet when you have 2000 followers, it’s impossible to know everyone. You know that everything you say is under the microscope. You know that some of them disagree with you.
You know that if you just anger the wrong people, well - they will come after you. And because you’re identified as the server moderator, you’re effectively walking around with the Server Ambassador badge, so the consequences will come not just for you, but for everyone who has entrusted their connections to you.
It’s stressful. It’s anxiety inducing. It’s a thankless job which requires walking around very carefully.
Thank you both for your work. Additionally thank you to @james for some very interesting moderation-related discussions in the past.
And it is such a relief I don’t have to do it any more. I hope both of you feel better when you get the weight off of your shoulders.

@erincandescent it really isn't great that as someone running an instance you just have to kind of remind yourself to Shut The Fuck Up about anything that you expect would be controversial, or that anyone could take the wrong way, and even then,
that running a community and running technical infrastructure are accidentally tied together doesn't help, either

@halcy “This thing, that I have opinions on, that I have to have opinions of as a moderator, I can barely dare speak of it, because if I do, everything will explode in my vicinity”
