@ivy hm! (from transitively linked page on user privacy):
Collaboration.** Privacy and safety present nuanced issues and we know we can’t address them alone. That’s why we’re grateful to work with organizations including NCMEC, the Family Online Safety Institute, Tech Coalition, Crisis Text Line, the Digital Trust & Safety Partnership, the Trust & Safety Professionals Association, Connect Safely, AccessNow, and Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism.
@floreani @zemmi @ireneista: are these all generally ok orgs? i think NCMEC is totally different than NCOSE right? also are non-US regions sufficiently represented? curious which questions i should be asking for unfamiliar advocacy orgs in this space is all

@ivy @floreani @zemmi @ireneista "terrorism" is a red flag imo but sigh can't be worse than the feds on the EFF board

@hipsterelectron @floreani @zemmi @ireneista interesting, yeah text communication has basically non-existent privacy

@hipsterelectron @floreani @zemmi @ireneista it's just interesting to see discord actually rolling out e2ee for calls although its still not out and idk if it'll change from now till then

@ivy @floreani @zemmi @ireneista i think audio calling is a much harder problem than just implementing signal or using an existing signal impl for text (signal itself has been spending a TON of resources on this for the past few years and is improving noticeably every few months). so if discord can make a splash about encrypting calls, it'll be a bigger moat that's much harder for any smaller entity to attack, so discord wins by attrition. bad incentive model!
-
@hipsterelectron @ivy @floreani @zemmi @ireneista isn’t e2ee for calls way easier from a cryptosystem pov since it’s synchronous? there’s the problem of “if you are in a group call and the server can’t do it, how do you handle varying quality levels” I guess?
-
@easrng @hipsterelectron @ivy @floreani @zemmi well... it's different problems
there's this side channel from the bit rate, you wind up having to be really careful about the behavior of the data over time

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] oooooh hadn’t thought about that.
Fuck it: constant bitrate encryption it is. hey why is my data usage so high.
