Is there a way to extend database read/writes without modifying the original code?

I'm curious about creating a simple mode that uses redis (for speed) as the cache, but then persists data on either IPFS or Ceramic Network.

The mod itself is easy from my branch, looking at the code, but I was wondering if there is some way to do it as a plugin?

You can modify/override methods on the db object but not sure if it's worth the trouble.
