It got pretty ugly: disinfo from a DC-based industry-funded “privacy” organization, legislative maneuvers that even experienced people had never seen before, a state senator who represented Amazon holding a bill with money for eviction prevention hostage to try to force it through … good times. But eventually they gave up, and in 2023 we passed a very strong health data privacy bill instead. Yay! Unfortunately will this was happening several other states passed versions of the bill, including the Even Worse Virginia Privacy Act and the Slightly Better But Still Not Good Colorado Privacy Act. More positively the legislator who called my partner by mistake helped pass the Shield Law which means WA companies can’t share health or location data with law enforcement in states that criminalize abortion or gender-affirming health care. Grassroots activism FTW!

@travis It's probably the total onboarding experience. One thing that tech companies understand very well is 'conversion'. This is curating the user experience from the moment the potential new user does a web search for the product until they are up and running. Mastodon, frankly gets an F, maybe a D- for conversion. The 'dated' UI is part of it, maybe the biggest part, but the lack of hand holding and marketing pizzazz through the new user process is a killer.
