@yosh another one i see: being able to switch between development and opsat minimum this endows you with a certain amount of empathy for the other side of things - even if you're never going to do sre-ish things, you need to be able to work with them and understand their thoughts and concerns, and vice versawhat's more, as you move up you more likely than not will have to do some amount of both anyways. owning a system tends to involve both operational and development responsibilities

@yosh It happens to me sometimes, but nowhere near 100% of the time, maybe more like 10%, if that.

But what you will learn in due course, if you stay in the tech industry, is that money does not work the way you think. Your bosses are lying to you. And if they are not, they are deluded too. When the inevitable parting of ways between the idealistic entrepreneurs and their benevolent benefactor (sarcasm intended) venture capitalists arrives, the money wins. Every time.

@yosh I really wish I had a reason to start fires on a regular basis so I could justify carrying fire starting equipment.I do regularly carry a tiny pocket knife with a 4cm blade that I use all the time. I used to carry a similarly sized screwdriver and I was genuinely surprised at how many things I came across in daily life that needed unscrewing or screwing.

@yosh I think I saw some study once that suggested the difference between keyboard layouts (QWERTY, DVORAK, COLMAK, or even random, but no 36-key layouts so maybe not exactly applicable) made basically no difference in typing speed once someone was sufficiently trained in that layout. So, that seems in line with your experience.I wouldn't be surprised if 36-key and 100-key layouts are enough different that you could actually be proficient at both at the same time and switch seamlessly.
