It strikes me that (at least in Europe), _de jure_ #standards are no longer primarily seen by their sponsors as tools for #interoperability. Rather, they are now seen mainly as a way to force markets to pay royalties on SEPs (#patents essential for implementation of the standards) - that is, as a way to tax the interoperability that was supposed to reduce costs.In the process, #OpenSource implementation is also chilled, but that's not the actual goal and is becoming increasingly inconvenient.
