We currently have one video, Amy’s triangle solo. I made it in iMovie HD on an old iBook.
Please subscribe to the channel if you use YouTube and like rock songs about vintage computers and putting Linux on things.

I will be posting less often here going forward. Sorry folks.I have also made the decision to remove ActivityPub from my website, because there's a moderation burden there that I'm unable to continue at this time.
You can still subscribe to updates via RSS though!

Deleted my affirming Friday post because I can't escape pervy guys replying to me.@lucyllewy but that won't help with the next one, and the next one, and the next one.
I don't want to play whack-a-troll 24 hours a day.

Deleted my affirming Friday post because I can't escape pervy guys replying to me."But Veronica, it's defederated, so there's nothing we can do about that"
I know. That's why I'm saying maybe this place isn't fun for a woman with a following.

Deleted my affirming Friday post because I can't escape pervy guys replying to me.Since a few of you have asked, I'll just explain what happened this time.
I posted an affirming message like I do every Friday, with a message like "call someone you miss".
Folks in the comments started sexually harassing me, and when someone pushed back, the harassers said that they have fun harassing me.
My favorite* part of this is that because I'd blocked them, they could carry on talking about how fun it is to harass me and I couldn't see it.

* I don't love this -
Deleted my affirming Friday post because I can't escape pervy guys replying to me.I'm sorry if I've seemed so down lately, folks.
With notoriety comes attacks, I guess. I was hoping the fediverse would feel different, but it's just not.

I guess that's one more thing I don't get to do here anymore.

I just realized what I hate about modern chat: it's not a small window on the screen anymore, it's *the whole screen*.I just realized what I hate about modern chat: it's not a small window on the screen anymore, it's *the whole screen*.
Discord (et al) is barely usable in a small window, whereas AOL Instant Messenger was *very* usable in a small window as you went about your browsing.
For me, smaller window = fewer distractions.

I've had a few folks ask me how I make https://www.thestopbits.net load so quickly.I've had a few folks ask me how I make https://www.thestopbits.net load so quickly.
It's a boring answer: it's tiny.
There's almost nothing you download when you visit. There's no JavaScript and we use whatever font you have as the default.
It's not a trick, it's just how things used to be. It has to load on a 28.8 modem, so on your modern machine it's going to feel zippy.
Modern websites can feel zippy too.

Anyone have an FTP client they like for Windows 9X?Anyone have an FTP client they like for Windows 9X?
I'm having fun playing with these systems this week but pulling out floppies is painful at times.
I always used something that came with my AOL setup back-in-the-day but I have no idea what that was.

POLL: how many so-called "desktop computers" are currently on your desk, ready for use? Plugged in, ready to go, just need to turn them on to use them?POLL: how many so-called "desktop computers" are currently on your desk, ready for use? Here's a tip for all of you multi-billion-dollar corporations out there! Also, you can INCREASE your retention rate while DECREASING costs with this ONE LITTLE TRICK:
Come closer...
[hushed tones] make sure the employees who can cancel a customer account have absolutely no access to the systems which can cancel customer payments. By separating concerns, you can literally keep billing people after they think they quit your service!
No losers but the customers, am I right?!?!

Make sure to cram AS MUCH JAVASCRIPT AS POSSIBLE into your customer cancellation pipelines. That way, when even the smallest hiccup occurs with your web infrastructure, your customers will be so annoyed at trying to cancel, they'll decide cancelling isn't worth their time and just keep paying you month after month.
It's that easy! Win win!

I'm trying Arch again for the first time in a bit.@rwg For the record, I actually think Arch is easier to install nowadays than it's ever been thanks to the `archinstall` script and the incredible Arch Wiki.
It's not perfect, but it might be as easy to install as Debian is now, and that's really saying something.
As someone who's used both Arch and Manjaro, I've always experienced that Arch is tougher to install but much easier to administer and troubleshoot. Now that installation hurdle is a lot lower.

I don't harbor ill will for Manjaro but it's not Arch. In much the same way Ubuntu isn't Debian. Different experience.
