I have a long way to go, but slowly starting my #BotsInSpace migration.@stefan Does GoToSocial support mastodon's migration feature? Like is it migrating all the followers as well?
-
With the sad news of the #BotsInSpace server closing, what do you all plan to do with your bots?@jef @stefan @botwiki if you're hosting the bots on mastodon.social that's just more centralized than botsinspace haha
But the reason is a lot of instances don't want to support a bunch of bot accounts, they're having enough funding issues as is hosting regular accounts, so botsinspace was an easy place to put a bot without having to find instances that don't mind you creating 10 different bot accounts.
I'd love to see some simple server you could deploy to glitch.com (or similar) that just has the ActivityPub or Mastodon API implemented and you could run your own with a click of a button.

looks like Threads is testing some sort of "search ads" with Amazon@liaizon I don't think that's an ad, pretty sure it's based on some sort of trending search
-
this was thread was actually the one I was meaning to share before.@liaizon @blaine @jonny nitpicking- so probably not all that important of a distinction- but I'd argue the bigger centralization issue here isn't so much that a significant chunk of fedi is on mastodon.social, but that most of fedi is on Mastodon software in general which often means issues solved in other fedi software just don't work because mastodon doesn't support it.

From BlueSky their "starter packs" were a good idea. Here is a #Fediverse early incarnation riffing on that idea from @stefan ...@stefan @shellsharks @tchambers
Mastodon technically has 'featured profiles', which is somewhat similar to a starter pack- but they dropped them from the UI a long time ago and never brought it back. it would be cool to see Mastodon make that visible since you can still go to someone's profile and click 'feature on profile, it just doesn't really do anything.
@box464 actually built an external tool that can manage them
-
Another idea I'm playing with: a fediverse starter pack.@stefan does mastodon have endpoints you can hit that'll follow an account if you're signed in on the server already. For example, if they entered their server, could you have a follow button that links to: mastodon.social/@[email protected]/follow
And when you click it, it opens and follows the user? I feel like that was a thing on Twitter, but I might be imagining things

It looks to me like Bluesky is now roughly neck and neck with the fediverse in terms of users (~12M each).@ben I'm not sure where I'd look for this information, but I assume Bluesky has had more DAUs/MAUs than the fediverse for awhile now?

Meta Inc.That's a long laundry list. Milestone four was where we enabled interoperability with the fediverse, and was a final ship candidate. For anyone who knows the product, you might be laughing at the ambitiousness because we are far from full fediverse interop even today. In one of my weaker moments, I promised we could have this ready within the month. This was going to be the last thing we tackled in May. We took this very seriously.
I'm glad they're willing to acknowledge they over-promised on their Fediverse integration, still it feels like something that's very low on their list of priorities given that it's now been 1.5 years since then

2 weeks ago @ricmac wrote a post saying "With more of us now having multiple fediverse accounts, I'm curious how people are handling differentiating them..." -
Lots of great updates in the latest Mastodon release, but I am particularly excited about this.@stefan @raphael @deadsuperhero Are there any servers out there with an ad-supported model right now?
I've got nothing against it, and maybe it's because I have no frame of reference for how profitable any sort of ad is in 2024- but do non-invasive/non-targeted ads actually make a reasonable amount of money?
-
@stefan is there any difference between 'fediverse' and 'mastodon' when submitting a bot in the networks' field of that form?@stefan cool, thanks! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't breaking anything when submitting it as both a mastodon and fediverse bot

Threads has a list of all their blocked servers now, https://www.threads.net/moderated_servers@andypiper @iftas thanks! I'll take a look

They also have a way to appeal your banned server, though it looks like it requires an Instagram account to initiate. Still, I think more ActivityPub software should have some method of appealing server blocks- I know I've blocked servers for spam that I just haven't had the time to go back and see if they've dealt with their spam problem.
Side Note: There's some terrible domains on that blocklist and I wish there were a better way for me, a single user server, to keep an up-to-date blocklist without spending 24/7 browsing the federated timeline

Anyone have a good blog post on the fediverse for people who have 0 technical know how? Something like Fediverse for Dummies in 5 minutesAnyone have a good blog post on the fediverse for people who have 0 technical know how? Something like Fediverse for Dummies in 5 minutes

Fediverse contains multitudes.@stefan @BeAware I think there could be a legal exploration into this topic as well.
I know implied copyright has been discussed for years regarding publishing to the web or to an RSS feed. In the US I recall a case where a subscription news-syndication platform was pulling in the full text of RSS feeds and they were being sued under the idea that just because someone posts an RSS feed doesn't mean you can use the contents of that RSS feed for any purpose.
I'm not sure if the same would apply to ActivityPub but I don't know if I have an explanation for why it wouldn't
