In the latest instalment of my Web 2.0 memoir, I reflect on the final quarter of 2010 — including another trip to Silicon Valley. 2010 was, in hindsight, peak ReadWriteWeb. As you'll read in following instalments, 2011 got... tumultuous. But you never quite know what will hit you next in the tech industry, so I was feeling cautiously optimistic at the time. I'm working on a post about Bluesky protocol and I found this video helpful (I must admit, I didn't realize Dan Abramov actually worked for Bluesky until watching this...no wonder he's so active over there). The comparisons to the way the early web worked are interesting. I do like the idea of having a domain I own verify my profile. Came across this today on Bluesky, by @tomgauld.bsky.social. Have to admit, it does sum up the present situation. We are all quite medieval when it comes down to it, lots of room for both kingdoms to grow (as long as Meta doesn’t nuke ours and the blockchain VCs don’t blow up theirs).

@EnglishMobster Thanks, that’s a good explanation. I guess we shall see, as currently decentralization in Bluesky is more theoretical than current reality. So right now the only way to connect to others is through its central “search engine” service. That gives them a lot of power. But I do agree it’s a fascinating experiment and so I’m keen to see how it turns out.

@ricmac @pluralistic Anything that needs funding to exist is going to run into this problem. The original creators might have great goals all about helping society, but at some point the VC's come in either by investing or buying outright, and then they don't care about that stuff at ALL.So you really need to write whatever vision you have into the bylaws of your company so that violation of them, or attempt to change, results in the product being public domain. But now harder to sell/fund

I think it would’ve been a split between Mastodon and Bluesky — the former because it’s open, the latter because it’s technically interesting/exciting. Good luck to all the #NaNoWriMo participants this year (National Novel Writing Month). It's now 21 years since I did it, along with making the somewhat unwise decision of blogging my progress all through November 2003 on ReadWriteWeb. I did complete the 50,000 word challenge by the end of November, although the resulting scifi novel — about an interplanetary internet and extraterrestrials — was very bad and shall never be seen again.

@ricmac @tomgauld.bsky.social when will the market value of text/data produced (primarily) for electronic consumption exceed the market value of that produced (primarily) for human consumption? Has this already happened?

@ricmac Something has seemed wrong for a while now. It just wasn't playing out as much through WP. He's been very chaotic and messy at times on Tumblr. On the one hand, it's sad. On the other, he's got all the resources necessary to figure things out, which is more than can be said for most of us.

p.s. on Flickr I discovered a pristine full-page screen capture of ReadWriteWeb from September 2010. @enricostn Yes it’s a great point, WP does have a better UI for non-tech users than many (except when it’s Gutenberg). That’s something other CMS’s need to get better at.

@artlung @molly0xfff I love what Molly is doing, but I’m not sure how to apply POSSE to a long-form narrative project like mine. But that’s ok, I am really writing for posterity (hope that doesn’t sound too pompous) and so I have to accept that short-term gains will be much harder to come by.
