@UlrikeHahn That's not to imply that everything I contribute has some wider, grander purpose. Absolutely not. But I need to set myself some kind of ground rules or else I'll be back to arguing with trolls about mandatory bike helmet legislation and bicycle registration, or something else unproductive for everyone involved. Maybe I should say that I try to be kind to those I'm talking to, and if I can't be kind, I probably shouldn't be talking to them.

OP: *Expresses frustration; elides some details*@UlrikeHahn @jenniferplusplus I an old, and have been on the Internet a long time. I have learned two things (of relevance). 1: Unsolicited advice is criticism. 2: If I'm contributing to a thread because I think "someone is wrong on the internet" rather than trying to achieve something good and positive and mutually beneficial, I should Just Not.

It's about 6 miles to the nearest town with a shop selling more than bread and milk (4 to the farm shop), but when my car reached the end I chose not to replace it. I do my best to go by bike whenever I can. I should state that we are not car free - we used to have two for work contract reasons. When it's dark, pishing down, and blowin a hoolie, I have been known to take the easy option, but I try hard not to make excuses! #BikeTooter

If just one in five urban residents permanently changed their travel behaviour in this way over the next few years, we estimate it would cut emissions from all car travel in Europe by about 8%."
