    • Coordinating French translation

      Hi!

The French translation of NodeBB is already quite good but some areas are a bit confusing. To give an example: “Watching” topics and “Following” users are both described as « Abonnements ».

I also wonder if “Topic” should not be translated by « Discussion » instead of « Sujet ». E.g. « Répondre en commençant une nouvelle discussion » feels easier to get than « Répondre à l'aide d'un sujet ».

As a Mastodon user, I also feel it would be nice to get the translation to use non-gendered terms as much as possible and middle dots inflexions when not.

These kind of changes would affect many strings in the translation. How could we coordinate such an effort? Is there anyone to convince that we should make these changes?

    • Less eager emoji autocompletion

      Hi!

In French typography, the rule is to put a space before colons (we write « les suivantes : » instead of "following:”). Sadly, having a space before a colon will trigger emoji autocompletion.

This is really annoying because we keep writing 💯 everywhere and having to delete it afterward. The key combination is “space”, “colon”, “enter” because you usually put colons before a quotation or a list…

With emoji-extended, there was a panel to set the regex. I'm not sure if that's really useful. Maybe just a 2-5 seconds timer before showing the autocompletion box would be welcome. Or maybe don't insert any emoji if enter is pressed while not having interacted with the autocompletion box in any way. Or just an option in ACP to disable autocompletion…

I had to disable the emoji plugin entirely for now.

      Thanks for any help!

@Thrrp Thanks for the responsiveness! Plugin upgraded. Clustering works really nicely!

@Thrrp Another issue: chat modals are displayed behind the map (on /map). Manually setting z-index to 0 using the inspector tools seems to fix this but I'm not familiar with NodeBB CSS at all.

Some members of my community wanted exactly something like that, so huge thanks!

I've just set it up and it's working pretty well!

@Thrrp The main downside I've found right now: when two members have the same location, you can only see one. Is it something that needs to be changed at the MapBox level or an issue with the plugin itself?

    • RE: Coordinating French translation

I've been there, but I don't see anyway I could start a discussion with other translators. Should I just go ahead and do as I see fit? I'd rather not get into an edit fight if others disagree.
