Relaxing treatment of non-notes by Mastodon@johnonolan @thisismissem @julian @hongminhee @pfefferle definitely a situation where neither of us is convincing the other ‍️. But I’m just some guy with opinions on the internet (and experience in other OSS projects). My opinions deserve no weight here, so I will slink away

Pretty excited to see Patagonia launch a waxed canvas jacket.Pretty excited to see Patagonia launch a waxed canvas jacket.
Nearly all bags and jackets made with coated polymers (ie plastic coated with forever plastic) would be better with waxed canvas. A little heavier, but more durable, more maintainable, and far more attractive.

Relaxing treatment of non-notes by Mastodon@johnonolan @thisismissem @julian @hongminhee @pfefferle thankfully Linus has never been a reasonable standard for how to treat other people, not now, and not then.
And there is a huge difference between “we will not merge your code without talking about it first” and “if you write code without talking to us, we will not merge it”. I hope you can see that.
-
Relaxing treatment of non-notes by Mastodon@julian I agree, you have beaten that analogy to death
You are welcome to do whatever the hell you want with code I post for free on the internet. And I am welcome to ignore all of that work, or not.
Nothing you do to my code intrinsically affects anything in my life.
-
Relaxing treatment of non-notes by Mastodon@thisismissem @johnonolan @julian @hongminhee @pfefferle totally. These just don’t feel like nudges.
And sometimes, those big pull requests are the only way someone can work. It doesn’t mean the maintainers owe the author anything. But there are a *lot* of people whose first step cannot be “have sizable organization and permission meeting with stranger”.
All of my major pre-puppet contributions started with experimenting with code.
-
Relaxing treatment of non-notes by Mastodon@johnonolan @thisismissem @julian @hongminhee @pfefferle it’s only rearranging the furniture if they accept the PR, as you know.
OSS is supposed to be about permissionless innovation, so it’s weird to have to get permission first.
-
Relaxing treatment of non-notes by Mastodon@thisismissem @johnonolan @julian @hongminhee @pfefferle that’s good to hear. Because… that’s not the way I see them talk about it. Literally every time someone talks about doing a PR, there’s a request for consultation beforehand. I’ve never seen that in any other community.
(It’s true that my OSS contributions were mostly quite a while ago. And a lot of them were to the project I started, which I absolutely did not run that way.)
-
Relaxing treatment of non-notes by Mastodon@johnonolan @julian @thisismissem @hongminhee @pfefferle except the maintainers have made it clear they do not want PRs unless you get pre-approval from them for your implementation plan or whatever.

I was telling someone the other day: that tech execs these days are basically a mashup of Ayn Rand, Gordon Gekko and wannabe Steve Jobs@skinnylatte they want the plaudits jobs gets, but they don’t want to do the actual work, or go through the transformations he went through

representation is important. thank you unicode team.@molly0xfff perfect illustration of my life when my premie twins were learning to sleep and eat

View of Portland from Rocky Butte Natural Area (thanks @lkanies for the rec)\@skinnylatte did you make it to the top, btw, with the dial/map pointing to all the mountains?
Looks like you should have seen a couple, at least, if not all five

View of Portland from Rocky Butte Natural Area (thanks @lkanies for the rec)\@skinnylatte excellent! Glad you made it!

There’s a conservative-ish candidate for supervisor in my neighborhood.@skinnylatte Portland is going through the same thing. There is a mayoral candidate whose main campaign promise is “zero homeless people within one year”.
Yeah, there’s no humane way to achieve that ever, much less in one year.

#NCP@coffeegeek switching from Fuji to canon would be a *huge* change, though, in usability and, well, how damn big the camera is. And of course, the body is the cheap part, it is the glass that gets you.
I’m half tempted to try out one of the mirrorless Nikons+ with the physical controls. But… my Fuji system is basically complete, and I really love it. And I don’t use it anywhere near enough to justify switching again (I swapped from Olympus in 2017, for colors and physical controls)

If I had ski bums for kids I might be tempted. But I do not.

I was all about hatches when I was young. Heck, I still really like them.
The “off-road” one does not look great, though.

#NCP@coffeegeek thanks!
(I did not say I was a *good* landscape photographer, just that it is what I tend to do. )
I am regularly I,pressed by how well you set up your product shoots. It is clearly a well honed skill.

#NCP@coffeegeek I still have not figured out how to incorporate flash into my life. I mostly shoot landscape, which obviously does not help. But I know it would be useful for other stuff.
So@every year I drag the flash out for the holidays then spend an hour trying to remember how it works.
Maybe a smaller one would be easier to use more often. I certainly have a lot of photos that I love but could use some fill.
