For my original problem, I think I found a bug.
For some reason the user password length was set to 0 (I didn't set it that way, it's not possible). When I set up my forum, my password was 7 characters long (before launching the site, I change the password to a complex and unique one, but during the development process I use a simple one that I remember). When I transferred the forum to the server and edited Users -> Settings, I set the minimum password to 8 characters, because it was impossible to leave the field with a default value of 0. And here I see a bug, because no one expects this behavior. Once the minimum password is set, NodeBB simply stops accepting any passwords that are shorter. This is completely non-obvious and as an admin I fell into a trap. I would expect two behaviors:

1. Continue to accept set passwords even of shorter length until a password change is required
2. Display a warning and reset passwords of shorter length if the administrator confirms this action.

The new design looks amazing! It looks very clean and comfortable. I would like to improve only one thing. Non-important elements of the post, such as Reply, Quote, Thumbs up/down, and maybe the date of the post (especially if it's the same as the previous post) should only appear when hovering over the post. Thus, there will be fewer distracting elements and it will be easier for the visitor to focus on the text. By hovering over a post of interest, users will get the required elements if they want to reply or vote.

NodeBB really lacks a plugin (or kernel features) that allows you to create a network of forums like WordPress MU (Network). For the ability to create multiple forums with a single user base and autologin. This is important not only for creating multilingual forums (where languages are not mixed up, but users can read and respond in different languages), but also to create narrow-topic forums within a single niche.

The first thing that caught my eye was a very empty, clean, large header. I admit that sometimes it is justified on the main page. But on the pages of topics, I would like the header to shrink vertically without taking up so much space. Also, the header would feel freer if it were not limited to two sidebars on the left and right. Perhaps for the main page it would make sense to set the stretch header to the width of the monitor.

Now for the sidebars. It's a bold decision to make two sidebars. I don't see anything wrong with that, especially on large wide monitors. But I would like the engine to be able to use these sidebars not only for the navigation menu on the left and the profile on the right. Yes, I'm talking about something like widgets. The right sidebar looks empty and all of its functions except search fit perfectly into a regular dropdown menu. If it were possible to add text or code to sidebars (or plugin widgets), as well as combine existing functionality into a single sidebar, that would satisfy most people.

I just now looked at the prototypes from Vlad and I understand that 2 sidebars will be sticky.
My picture is just an example of how you can unload the header. I think that unimportant elements should be reduced or put into static areas, giving the heading and text more air.

@ilblog I saw this functionality in the Discourse engine. I think this is very important. I wonder why there is still no plugin or kernel function in NodeBB. This allows you to seriously structure a forum and make it a useful community.

I support your initiative and I will be happy if this kind of plugin will become available to the NodeBB community.

For me now this is one of the main factors in deciding what to prefer for new projects. NodeBB or Discourse. There are many other factors, but this one I see as the main one for communities oriented towards the creation and maintenance of knowledge.

When you open the book, the metadata is on the last page, and all secondary or circumstantial information is in the footnotes at the bottom. The book is about reading, and not about finding out the size number, publisher, number of copies, etc. If we want to concentrate on the main thing, then we need to remove or hide the secondary. 95% of the visitor to a regular forum only read it, about 5% respond or create their own topics. How many people need metadata to post in the title of each topic, and what does it bring to the community? I think that such meta-information should either be moved to places where the eye is not looking for text (and this is not the top of the screen), or hidden in 1 click behind a drop-down menu or active icons.

I've been in the forums for over 20 years as a member and administrator. I have never used the "Mark Unread" button in my life. Maybe something is wrong with me, but in my picture of the world there are no situations for which such a function would become a solution.

PS I don't know how to do it right, I just threw my thoughts. And I know how wrong: all the classic forums with tables and a bunch of meta-information that no one needs. This is one of the reasons why they lost to social media and died.
