Well unless the founders of NodeBB thought it a genius idea to cripple the flexibility of the product so that no one would assume that out of the box it is good for anything other than simple text.

Basically, you're saying that if anyone wants to build anything besides a simple text forum they should look elsewhere?

This is a crazy question, so I apologize, but what if I wanted to post something other than walls and blobs of text like -- an image? How would I center that?

Is this accurate? The text editor is simply bold, italic and strikethrough (for some reason)?

I can't find a single document that describes how to upgrade a theme...

Do I need to just uninstall/reinstall? Will that get me the latest theme?

I uninstalled NodeBB to start over fresh. I dropped the mongo DB and did an rm -R on the nodebb directory.

Then I git cloned the latest version with git clone -b v1.x.x https://github.com/NodeBB/NodeBB.git nodebb

Then I built a new mongoDB and tried to start nodebb. I got an error indicating it was already running on 4567. So I ran the command line setup and built it on 7654.

So now I have a working version running on 7654 and a broken version answering on 4567 with no DB attached to it.

how do I fix this?

Well, I wiped and started over. Now it appears the latest nodebb import plugin https://github.com/akhoury/nodebb-plugin-import doesn't appear to be supported by 1.0.3.

Sigh... I can't win.

OK guys, this is literally the only thing holding us back from shut down our dev install and migrating for real this week. Is there any way I can do it myself?

In the Vanilla theme you can add widgets to the categories.tpl, category.tpl and topics tpl templates right there in the admin panel.

The specific widget I want to use is MOTD. It's very flexible and allows you to place anything from simple text to HTML.

Does anyone know how to get that capability when I select Persona as the active theme?

Having this exact same frustration. The categories.tpl to insert widgets is not consistent from theme to theme.

Persona being the default theme. I'd think it would have all of the available templates? In any case, how do I make the categories.tpl available in Persona so I can add widgets only to the category page?

Aaannd I get it now. Went back and read the instructions again. You get to the mongo command prompt by typing mongo.

Looking to add a bit more of an editorial feel to the front page. I want to pick topics to highlight in a bar across the top of the page much like the recent topics plugin does only with the image uploaded as the thumbnail as the background.

It doesn't have to be hand picked. I could work with it being just popular topics as well.

Is there a way to do that? Am I missing it?

I installed it and went to its config page in the admin and saved it. reloaded it. nothing appears. There are no screenshots so I have no idea how it's supposed to look. Part of a really frustrating pattern with plugins in general for this project (and others) to be honest

I've done a test import of a xenforo forum. I think I've worked out the bugs but I want to try a few more runs on the import to verify. Few weird things like the imported users showing up as guests and when I log in it shows me offline.

Anyway, the bugs aren't relevant. I jut want to know what the best way is to wipe what I have and run a fresh install of NodeBB. Any help would be much appreciated.

On our test forum we have a top level category with 3 sub categories. The top level category is just a title to hold the sub categories. We don't want users to be able to post in there.

I set the privileges so guests can't create or reply to topics in that category but the message is still there

"There are no topics in this category.
Why don't you try posting one?

How do I get that not to show up? Is a template hack the only way?

It looks like the current importer plugin doesn't support avatars. Does anyone know if there is work in progress to make that happen?
