@jalefkowit I thought Elon loves warlord types; why would he disable his Cybertruck?

So it turns out that Apple has a new app for managing iDevices on Windows, called (wait for it) "Apple Devices," and unlike iTunes it actually includes such 21st century conveniences as "a progress bar."@jalefkowit Can’t update the iPad over the air?

[Yes, I'm subtweeting Amazon]@peterb I continue to believe that #RTO is primarily based on these factors:
1. Executives (not managers—they don’t care) wanting more *control* over workers’ days. They want to imprison underlings in buildings so they have no choice but to attend to their commands. It strokes their ego and makes them look important. Bonus points if the executive works remotely most of the time.
2. Preserving commercial real estate values. Companies that have huge campuses and other investments in CRE are most eager to have people return to buildings. A famous fruit company would look like a fool for spending $5B on a space donut if it weren’t filled with people.
3. Municipalities are renegotiating tax breaks they offered based on employment targets. No foot traffic downtown = no tax incentives for companies.
4. It’s a hidden layoff. RTO is meant to be a hardship, so people quit. It doesn’t matter that the people who quit first are the most wealthy and in-demand workers. Numbers are numbers.

The distressing #Apple War On Affordances carries on with #macOS 15 #Sequoia. The distressing #Apple War On Affordances carries on with #macOS 15 #Sequoia. There is nary a button visible to dismiss this modal dialog in the App Store app. You just have to know to…uh…click somewhere in the grayed-out area…I guess…to dismiss it.
Clicking *on* the dialog also dismisses it for some reason? And you can’t select the text in the dialog—dragging in the dialog also dismisses it. Horrendous.
Clicking somewhere other than the grayed-out area (for instance, on the sidebar) does *not* dismiss the dialog. In fact, you can navigate away from the dialog by selecting another entry in the sidebar. In other words, the “dialog” is no longer a modal window overlaying the main window, but a subview of the content view.
The whole thing smells like a React.js web app.
This is distressing. It’s another useless, novice-hostile change, and a further erosion of the macOS HIG.

Holy shit https://mastodon.social/@ZachWeinersmith/113142605894704475@Rycaut @ZachWeinersmith Well, making it expensive to extend copyright means that only rich people can protect their property. I want corporations to contribute their share of public domain works.

Holy shit https://mastodon.social/@ZachWeinersmith/113142605894704475@Rycaut @ZachWeinersmith I don’t like that, because small-time artists benefit greatly from the fact that copyright is automatically granted to all new works, and the onus is on the challenger to show that the work is derivative.
In the US, I think we need to continue to pressure congress to reduce the potency of copyright (and patents too, while we’re at it). I also hope that a more enlightened court will rule that the existing state of copyright and patent protections go against the intent of the Constitution (i.e. “To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts”), as it’s reasonable to conclude that reducing copyright and patents will promote *more* progress, not less.

I just heard someone mention the word “Tannoy” and it reminds me that I haven’t seen audio equipment with that brand since I left Singapore; which kinda makes sense as it’s a British brand, and Singapore was a British colony.I just heard someone mention the word “Tannoy” and it reminds me that I haven’t seen audio equipment with that brand since I left Singapore; which kinda makes sense as it’s a British brand, and Singapore was a British colony.
Anyway, today I learned that “I heard it on the Tannoy” in British English is slang for “I heard it on the public address system”, e.g. in a department store.

Holy shit https://mastodon.social/@ZachWeinersmith/113142605894704475@Rycaut @ZachWeinersmith Copyright should have very short lifespans, so that new works enter the Public Domain many times during a person’s lifetime.
Works entering the Public Domain should be the norm. Creative works belong to all of us and enrich us all. People should be encouraged to remix and create derivative works, some of which will be distinctive enough to gain them their own copyright for a few years. Rinse and repeat.

I just learned that Mercedes-Benz’s highly-touted #DrivePilot Level 3 #ADAS has not shipped in over two years.@nuthatch @octothorpe I’m being a bit tongue-in-cheek, but there were a lot of AI features that were marketed as “beta” and “coming later”

Yet another #selfDriving #vaporware product.
Remember: never pay for “future” features for your car. Only pay for things you can use when you drive off the lot

I had to check and double check that Elon actually wrote this tweet, because it seems so awful, so outlandish, that not even King Cringe would make such a faux pas.I had to check and double check that Elon actually wrote this tweet, because it seems so awful, so outlandish, that not even King Cringe would make such a faux pas.
But nope, it’s real: https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1833728804579111268 and it’s as much rapey as it is desperate and cringey.
How are people still buying this guy’s products? Everything he touches is shit as far as I’m concerned.

This is such a sweet vignette of life from #Singapore, where conservatives still largely dictate social norms. This is such a sweet vignette of life from #Singapore, where conservatives still largely dictate social norms. Although Chinese opera has always had male actors portray women (due to patriarchal exclusion more than anything else), actual #drag performance is still a small and growing niche. Additionally, #lgbtq folks were only recently allowed to express themselves in public (it’s still fraught), same-sex relationships were decriminalized only two years ago (although it had not been prosecuted for quite a while), and same-sex marriage is still illegal.
So against that backdrop, this grandmother’s support for a child to express himself through art is especially heartwarming to me.

A manual #Porsche #GT3 Touring with 2300 miles was just sold on #BringATrailer for $327k, well over its MSRP of $240k after options, over a base price of $164k.A manual #Porsche #GT3 Touring with 2300 miles was just sold on #BringATrailer for $327k, well over its MSRP of $240k after options, over a base price of $164k.
Insane as that sounds, that price is probably only a little more than what the original owner paid for it. The demand for the GT3 Touring is still outstripping supply. Dealers are routinely demanding $50k–$100k markups (sometimes in the form of trade-in arrangements wherein the customer makes a huge loss).
Porsche is leaving a lot of money on the table, and dealers are raking it in. The 992 GT3s were supposed to be a mass-market product, unlike the 991s and 997s, but apparently Porsche needs to make a *whole* lot more units to take the inflation out of the dealers.
Bananas.
