Reading Fox News’ website reminds me of scrolling in China, where new“story” after “story” repeats how wonderful the Chinese state is and how well Xi is doing, where TikTok shows you China’s military prowess and plays patriotic music between clips of happy families dancing, and you’re just in this weird wonderland you can’t escape, Our Guy Is Doing Is Great And There Is No Other Side To This Story. With an extra dose of Russian gaslighting and demonization of opposition. True propaganda.

@cyberlyraSince people are interested in receipts here are two examples (of many) that ring true to my experience and those of my friends and colleagues:
-
@cyberlyra@elricofmelnibone There are many catalogued reasons why many women do not feel at home contributing to FOSS. Many, many reasons. Most of them come down to institutionalized sexism. Some of that is just plain toxicity, being undervalued, not taken seriously, mansplained to, feeling unsafe. RS's behavior is exemplary of this culture, plus predation. And women who made it to MIT or to FSF with the talent to be there were, indeed, not just repulsed but actively repelled from computing by RS.

“Under [Stallman’s] ideological leadership, the free software movement is unsafe, particularly for women.@Dany By that same logic, men have more time to contribute to open source projects because they are *evading* a fair share of household and domestic labor, making for greater gender imbalance in this &many walks of life.
If you think women have less time because they're saddled with more care work and domestic chores, then for chrissakes pick up more of the damn slack and demand all your male friends do too.
That said, a toxic/sexist culture is rampan and continual. It's not just "one" reason.

Just remembering this posting from @pluralisticJust remembering this posting from @pluralistic in 2016. Seems continuously relevant with all the apologists and sanewashing about these days. When people tell you what they will do with their enemy of choice, believe them.

“Under [Stallman’s] ideological leadership, the free software movement is unsafe, particularly for women.“Under [Stallman’s] ideological leadership, the free software movement is unsafe, particularly for women. Women represent just 3% of the free software community, compared to 23% of industry programmers generally. This is no accident.”
This, 100%. Thank you for saying out in the open what we have all lived, survived, observed, and known to be true for decades. Now that F/OSS can’t look away, what will we do about it? The fish rots from the head, after all…

Kind of a jarring experience to have dudes publicly in my mentions defending Stallman over individual nitpicks on one item in a thousand-page dossier while right next to them on my TL are locked posts from women detailing decades of trauma and ruined c...@glyph
omg the stories.. I have many friends who went throigh the media lab and everyone knew. Sadly, so many talented women pushed out of computing through exposure to that predator. -
Hi. In the spirit of XOXO and the past couple of years of preliminary work and the things that need fixing, I'm starting a micro-studio and kicking off a community support setup and fixing what I can reach in the only way I know how.@kissane
love this! Keep it up! -
It's bittersweet to me to think about that we're going to lose Voyager I & II sometime in the next 12 years and there's absolutely nothing we can do about it.@hrefna
Lose contact you mean? They are otherwise still going strong as our interstellar emissaries!
meanwhile on Earth their progenitors are hitting their 90s and passing away. It has been difficult to lose that generation of planetary leaders -
So, one thing about being an American abroad right now is that electoral candidates really want our votes, but they don't actually offer any benefits for Americans abroad.@evan
they can absolutely do things that make your life misrrable or better. I remember when Harper restricted Canadians abroad from extending citizenship to their spouses, just a few years before I got married. And when Trudeau opened up voting to Canadians abroad I couls finally vote again after two decades away. Those decisions were made by domestic voters and I had no say, but they definitely influenced my experience.
