• sub-categories
• and/or tagging
• regular email digests
• reputation system
• trust levels for users
• var. spam detection methods
• search!
• similar topics blocks
• categories with category description and category icon

Discuz was one of the first to do this and they reward every action - maybe too much, but some rewards are defeinitely needed.

I second that request. Having an admin demo helps a lot, as moderation among others is one very important thing in forums
