@mattdm Wow. I think the output of that is the most depressing thing I've seen in a very long time. Just a superb illustration of what Trump is so good at.

What did people think of the debate last night? I watched 1993 episodes of Ghostwriter instead.@mattl I'm a little groggy and thought you said Ghostwatch, and I would 100% prefer to watch Pipes.
I switched it off before the end. Learned exactly nothing new. Walz comes across as being incredibly authentic; Vance not so much. Not exactly breaking news.

I know there are a few conversations around the fediverse etc where I’m being tagged, but I don’t have the mental bandwidth to engage. When I come up for air and am less worried about their well-being, I’ll be able to think about the internet again. For now, know that my silence is not lack of caring. Thanks.

If it’s actually true that WordPress only makes $23K a year from donations that really puts the idea that donations are a sustainable open source business model to bed.If it’s actually true that WordPress only makes $23K a year from donations that really puts the idea that donations are a sustainable open source business model to bed. It powers 40% of the web and only receives a fraction of one person’s salary in return. Ouch. https://werd.social/@ben/113217002349938830

Forgive me for not knowing this, re: WordPress. I'm not trying to sew conspiracy theories - I just don't know how it fits together, and I'm having trouble finding this written down. Also, the WP Foundation has two board seats beyond Matt, who happen to be a private equity executive (and former Republican candidate) and a PwC IT consultant who was active in the blogging community over a decade ago.
All three are unpaid and (officially) report spending an hour a year on the Foundation.
From its filings, the Foundation doesn't feel like more than a shell. But I know I'm missing something.

You can see the drop-off in 2016 when the WordPress Community Support PBC was created. I guess much of the money has been floated through there since then, with some individual donations going to the Foundation.
(Is $23K the totality of all personal donations to WP? It powers 40% of the web, so that would say a lot about open source sustainability.)

The WP Foundation reported $23K in revenue on its last available 990. That doesn't seem like enough to sustain the plugin / upgrade servers. So who runs / pays for those? WordPress Community Support PBC? Automattic? Someone else?

You know how left-leaning groups tend to purity test each other and in doing so miss the forest for the trees with regards to the larger mission?@fifilamoura Thank you for this - I really appreciate the check. You're absolutely right and I should have considered my comment a little more before posting.

I'm worried we're seeing that in federated social web circles too. I'd rather see everyone lift each other up in service of the larger cause.
Edited to add: this was not a helpful comment from me. See discussion in the replies.

There are some interesting referral statistics embedded in this piece.@ricmac And even the open social platforms often strip referrers and utm tags, so nobody knows how if traffic comes from there. (Still Mastodon's biggest own-goal imo.)
I agree re: Discover counterbalancing search. It's such a shift towards the curated and sanitized, alongside the black box nature of it. I don't think it'll end well.
