@b0rk another social convention I’ve noticed: ANSI color codes provide normal/“Bright” colors, but color *schemes* assume bright is “bolder, lighter” not “higher contrast against the background”; the way programs use these color codes assumes a dark color scheme. Many CL/TUI programs I use are unusable with a light terminal theme

spent some time today working on this diagram of how the ASCII control characters work in unixthere are a lot of mistakes/missing nuance but I think it's really interesting how little structure there is. Special codes (like `3` for SIGINT) that are handled by the OS are mixed with just regular keypresses (like `13` for "enter”) which are mixed with codes that are handled by the application (like `1` for Ctrl-A in readline)(not looking for an ASCII history lesson right now)

SQLite has RTree indexes as a compile-time option, I don't know much about them but maybe there's a trick you could do with those

man setting up a cron job to run `brew update --auto-update` every 2 hours has really fixed basically all of my problems with `brew install` being slow(you can also set HOMEBREW_NO_AUTO_UPDATE but I decided I'd rather take the cron job approach -- `brew update` just updates the list of packages so it's not a big deal to run it every couple of hours)

@b0rk this is interesting. And it makes sense. The honest answer is that both things are true. If you want a login, you can have one out of the box. But also, we've iterated on auth mechanisms over the years. Trying to reach for new capabilities or enable different things. The capabilities that we want don't remain static. And we often decommodify and recomplicate things so we can try to "innovate" something.
