I am not a developer though, so that is why I reserve those types of questions for them. However, I am learning to become a full stack developer... just for kicks.

OOOORRRRR.... learn how to use the OS first, before going on a pointless hissy-fit and hoping to get support from people. If it is about setting up nodebb as a service on linux... the instructions work. Unfortunately one will have to do the hard work (aka reading and following the instructions). A couple of modifications here and there (if you know what you are doing) and presto, it works beautifully. Haven't had it crash once... except for nginx... but I fixed that.

@hariom-vashisth The Apache (or nginx) will act as the proxy/load balancer in this topology. It is a very simple HA/clustering setup, but one can take it further with more load balancers and use round robin DNS, if you want failover/HA for your load balancers. or one can skip apache/nginx and go ahead with just DNS load balancing.

The reason for the recaptcha/antispam question before SSO, is to avoid spammers using scripts to use SSO with a burner account (which I am seeing here on this forum). That is one way to avoid spam filters and creating more spam, which can annoy some forum users/admins.

So in other words...
click on Register -> click on SSO link -> Antispam question/recaptcha -> then click SSO login/agree button

I am planning on using NodeBB and was wondering how much space would around 10 million posts and 1 million users work out at? As using a VPS can cost a bit (storage-wise) and self-hosted can be relatively cheap, depending how much space the above mentioned will take.

If anybody can help me out with answering that, that would be great. I am in between NodeBB and Flarum, hence the question. I haven't gotten an answer at Flarum about this, though.

Scalability is what I want to know. Resources and performance I can figure out myself, but storage is hard to determine.

you might need:

After= mongod.service/redis.service (depends which one you use)

This will at least wait for your DB to startup before starting. It helps after restarts

@Giggiux That is correct. It will keep restarting until mongo/redis has started. I added mongod.service in the After parameter and does startup normally. I know mongod takes a minute or 2 to start, as I have tested this and nodebb is in the failed state until mongod has fully started. Sometimes mongod will show that it has started but nodebb fails to start. I just waited a couple of minutes and checked nodebb again (systemctl status nodebb) and it was up/active, without my intervention

This would be a typical setup/topology for clustering. This should be fault tolerant for nodebb, however, the DB will also need some HA/clustering later.

update to v1.5.3 had no issues. I'll try updating it to v1.6.0 and report back what happens.

I have the same issue.

I will give this a shot and see if this works.

One tip. This depends on your service provider or your infrastructure.

Take a snapshot of your server before updating.

• Freebsd uses snapshots (if you use ZFS) of your HDD
• if you are running a VM on hyper-v/vmware/xenserver, you can create a snapshot/checkpoint and revert easily.
• zip/tar your nodebb folder before updating, or copy it to another directory

those are 3 ways of having a rollback plan. One can create more elaborate ones, if the need arises

Make sure you have a backup/snapshot to revert to, in case of any issues
