@polotek Marco, these are wonderful reflections. Speaking as someone with a slight permanent disability in both wrists, have you had a professional ergonomic evaluation? Often there is a lot for us to learn about using computers more safely. Good luck.

So one of the things that is important about social media is that you can use it to really broaden your exposure to lived experiences out side of your own. -
There’s a Chinese restaurant in the Bayview that has the largest vegan dimsum and dinner I’ve ever seen at any Chinese place anywhere. It’s called Imperial Garden@skinnylatte On San Bruno Avenue! What we call the Portola district. The murals on the north side of the building are by my friend and neighbor Phillip Hua.

For A Project, I need to learn about the historical origins of #bitmap #fonts.@riley There was definitely a process of complicating the letters into a single form. The alphabets on cross-stitched samplers are a better source. Check out this one from 1798:

For A Project, I need to learn about the historical origins of #bitmap #fonts.@riley Sure, could be. Sampler and monogram embroidery is older.

For A Project, I need to learn about the historical origins of #bitmap #fonts.@riley Yes! I think that approach may be called needlepoint. The practices are old for sure. Thank you.

Media archives question - how many media companies preserve the history of ads in their publications alongside the articles in their online/digital archives?@Rycaut Your logic is sound. But for copyright-protected content the threat of possibly defending such cases — just one could bankrupt an archive — can make the proposal hard to invest in. The norm for the really old stuff is to digitize whole pages, which is closer to meeting your call, it just isn't by the same entities that printed them in the first place.

Media archives question - how many media companies preserve the history of ads in their publications alongside the articles in their online/digital archives?@Rycaut IMHO, the old contracts cannot be renegotiated individually. Perhaps new legislation could create a specific copyright exemption. However moral and useful, it would be very expensive to defend mass reuse on Fair Use grounds.

Media archives question - how many media companies preserve the history of ads in their publications alongside the articles in their online/digital archives?@Rycaut I thoroughly agree! But we must acknowledge that digitizing graphical ads is substantially more complex than article text. Also, I wager publishers' licenses to reproduce those ads never provided for any long-term reuse, so there would be legal risks in recirculating them.

Has anyone seen this kind of deterioration on a CD before?Has anyone seen this kind of deterioration on a CD before? The disc plays fine but the label layer is falling apart all over the place! Not sure whether to try to clean it off, or risk getting this stuff into my playing equipment.

The analog-encoded images sent into to space on the Golden Records are fascinating and mostly appropriate. The analog-encoded images sent into to space on the Golden Records are fascinating and mostly appropriate. But it is to NASA's eternal shame that it did not obtain copyright to half of them, which are now suppressed. Now we don't even know how our government represented us in the message. Here are the images we are allowed to see, and a list of what's missing:

Highly doubt these were first created on computers; where in the world have rectangular #tiles or #bricks carried a textual message? (The tiled signs in the #NYC subway are #mosaics, not based on a grid.) Where did bitmap fonts really start?
