@datarama it’s actually really reassuring to run into someone else who’s familiar with them! this is work that I can’t adequately explain to my friends or family, and as a non-academic I was starting to fear I was wasting my time — the only people who seemed to know what I was talking about were AI researchers, who have weird ideas about lambda calculus in general

What would the home computers I grew up with have been like if they were made by Commodore-Symbo...@datarama I love projects like that though! I’ve been so tempted to design and print a replica computer case. but also I’ve spent a lot of my night looking longingly at https://www.obsolescence.dev/pidp10.html — I think I just want to decorate my whole house with old computers (a choice that’ll make me extremely unpopular)

I’ve been obsessed with making a hardware Krivine machine for over a year because there’s something beautiful about a machine whose instruction stream is just calculus, but it’s become very obvious that a lot of other folks in this space are AI crackpots and weird fascists (not even sure why)

I don’t understand why computers had a universal programming environment but awful language (BASIC) for so long, but the universal environment and hackability disappeared as soon as better languages became reasonable on commodity hardware
