@jk the colours of everything have got duller since the late 80s/early 90s - I'd assumed that "everything was brighter in 1970s/80s" was just me being a kid/teen and my eyesight changing, but I've looked at modern photos of items from that era and there definitely were more bright colours everywhere..

these have so much more character than the modern packaging designs -
according to security researcher Baptiste Robert on twitter the following link is the model of pager that just exploded all across Lebanon in one of the largest hardware hacks/sabotage in recent history https://www.gapollo.com.tw/rugged-pager-ar924/@liaizon the Taiwanese aren't the main suppliers of those, they are from mainland China/Hong Kong (I've bought the non rechargeable version myself before from both countries). However the Taiwanese won't sell a handful, they want 500 minimum order quantity and its at that point the middlemen importing them to the destination country can be targeted and a supply chain attack carried out..

The carceral state spends 150M to try to recover 150K in fares.@skinnylatte in Britain we have separate revenue protection inspectors for railway/bus/metro etc - the only time the cops are with them is in some city areas where the inspectors might get aggressive pushback from those they challenge, even so there are way more civilian inspectors than cops (and none of these are armed)

"There are too many guns.@wdlindsy whilst I suspect neither him nor his grandad shot anybody, its likely because they both grew up in an era where the patriarchy was accepted and respected, and that is the "good old times" many men are hoping to get back to..
-
"There are too many guns.@wdlindsy if men like this are on the streets (even after attempts to punish/rehabilitate them for the crimes they have already committed), and they treat life (even their own) as cheap (also the driver of the van he crashed into was badly hurt) you can imagine what it would be like over here if we *didn't* have quite strict gun control (even so there's a trend to substitute cars for guns as "angry mens toys")
-
"There are too many guns.@wdlindsy this is the kind of thing we are up against - angry young man at 16 commits multiple crimes leading up to murder/sexual assault, does full 15 years minimum tariff (low as he would have been tried as juvenile), gets out in his late 30s driving recklessly as if nothing has happened - the choice of car is a pointer, it would have been a popular car when he went to prison and he would have made a choice to drive it (seems almost like a show of defiance)

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/09/rust-in-linux-lead-retires-rather-than-deal-with-more-nontechnical-nonsense/@packetcat you might find they are way older than 20, from speaking to the young folk round here (even those who are into tech) most have given up with Linux (other than for streaming media servers) and stick with Windows (we even had to do that on the community radio station as we couldn't get Libretime to reliably work and the maintainers seem to have mostly walked away)
-
"There are too many guns.@wdlindsy here in Britain we have a problem with the same angry young boys bringing knives to school and they are prepared to use them and it seems many only regret doing so when they end up spending 13-25 years at His Majesty's Pleasure; but gun control does at least limit the overall body count (the only mass shooting in a school here within my living memory was a pedo in Scotland shooting up an primary school he worked in and it led to a general ban on handguns in the entire country)
-
Fuck an assault weapons ban.only 5% of Police Officers are armed, and they need extra physical and mental health assessments before they can carry a firearm (even so many bad apples get through, the training régime favours "hard men" and a lot of the MetPol officers in London who were found to be misogynists and sexual predators are from the armed units)

As well as the bizarre need for making women procreate, we could consider his need to target childless folks as non contributors to society.@onepict of course if I had a wife and kids, particularly if they were mixed race, the gammons would be even angrier - and I'd be constantly wary about their safety, just as my own parents were - which is why British Asian parents get a reputation for being overprotective, which is partly true but it must have worked (I made it to my 50s )
-
As well as the bizarre need for making women procreate, we could consider his need to target childless folks as non contributors to society.@onepict even in England I feel too awkward to go to a lot of places as they are all geared to family groups, and a single brown man may be viewed as a threat (especially in the East with all the racial tension, a third of folk round here actively support Reform)
-
As well as the bizarre need for making women procreate, we could consider his need to target childless folks as non contributors to society.@onepict I think a lot of the USA "full quiver" stuff is literally preparing for some kind of war (and/or replacing the kids who get shot at school, or meet with accidents on the road/at work due to lack of regulation), but also paranoia that childless folk *do* have a lot more freedom and autonomy (I've noticed it so much in middle age even compared to my own friends, most of whom are now parents and grandparents)

So...Mastodon would struggle with a sudden influx of 2 million people from pretty much anywhere, and still needs to implement the protection/safety mechanisms that people have been calling for for years (otherwise the Fediverse will just fragment further)
