For the "fediverse" to become something useful that serves people other than weirdo "free-speech" techies, it has to be completely destroyed and the fragments of technology have to be rebuilt into unintended and subversive forms. We gotta have smaller clusters of instances with fewer people in them, who vouch for each other and call each other the fuck in. The "fediverse" has to mutate into something damn near unrecognizable. We can do it!

#fediblock for Are0h at h-i.social for unrepentant misgendering, aka transphobia and enbyphobiaAs a follow up because apparently it wasn't clear enough: purposefully misgendering people is, as I wrote above, shitty; I could also add dehumanizing, demeaning, humiliating, etc. Folks have every right to block someone for doing that, that's not up for debate. What I'm trying to address above is that you're tilting at windmills with this post, and it will have negative consequences for Ro in terms of being characterized as a villain, and it will catch other Black folks in the crossfire, whether you want it to or not, merely by virtue of kicking up this fucking endless-ass meta all over again and giving ammo to loathsome racists who thrive on games of telephone like this. I'm already seeing people boosting and getting riled up and self-righteous about it and that's exactly how dogpiles start up, we've seen it a million times.
I've admired stuff that you've posted in the past especially around blocking Threads, and doing Fedipact, and helping people with mutual aid and stuff. That's all great. But the "it pains me to do this" part of this particular post really has something of precious wounded white womanhood about it, and I'd suggest you just have a really good think about what you're doing here by posting this and opening this pandora's box all over again for the sake of someone who has faced a frankly preposterous amount of shit over the years, and largely keeps himself to himself these days.
That's all I gotta say, thanks for reading.

#fediblock for Are0h at h-i.social for unrepentant misgendering, aka transphobia and enbyphobiaThis post is going to provide a rallying point for people who already hate Ro for various reasons, and it's gonna lend legitimacy to campaigns against him since it's coming from somewhere else than the usual shit-hole dens of assholes. Intentional or not, essentially you're reinforcing the narrative of "trans people vs Black people" that so many people have bought into, and which has led countless Black folks to be driven off the fedi over the years by dogpiling and harassment.
To be clear, I agree that misgendering is shitty, but it's also not like Ro is going out looking for people to harass; he's not dropping into other people's mentions out of the blue misgendering them. On the contrary, he's the one who gets asshats coming into his mentions all the time to lecture and talk down to him. He reacts to that. So to be making a fediblock post about him seems rather overblown to me. I can understand making a fediblock for someone who's leaving shitty replies and kicking off dogpiles and looking for people to harass, but like what's your end goal in this case, get people to block him who he never would have interacted with in the first place?
Normally I never comment on other people's fediblock posts because it's their business, I can just ignore it and move on, but I feel it's important to reply in this case because it's just such a bomb you've gone and dropped for no apparent reason other than "taking a stand" and "sticking to your principles"; you're not protecting anyone with this post, and if anything it's going to cause further harm.
And for full disclosure, I've had him blocked for quite a while now not because he's ever misgendered me or anything (he hasn't, even though we've spoken a couple times in the past), but just because I eventually started to find him a bit annoying -- ie., the same reason I've blocked lots of people on here.

I wish folks would stop equating size of userbase with "success" of platform, it's never been an interesting metric to look at unless you're talking about megaplatforms that need millions and millions of people so they can just about break even by sell...Anyway I also have some qualms with folks discussing "the fedi" as some monolithic "thing" with a number of people using it, cuz it doesn't really make sense. Two people using "the fedi" might never even cross paths cuz their software has different affordances and their friend circle is so different, and adding one to the other and counting that as 2 "fedi users" ignores all the interesting differences.
It's a bit like lumping all different forum visitors on different forum softwares together back in the day and saying something like "the forum platform has x number of users"; it doesn't logically follow imo.
I think especially as people move towards allowlist federation it's gonna make less sense to talk about "the fedi" as a cultural monolith, and more sense to talk about multiple fedis or even just communities.

Back in the forum days nobody worth taking seriously was anxious about getting millions of people onto a forum, were they? And those forums weren't "failures" because of that, cuz they still connected people with similar interests together.
Stuff like user safety, fun, sustainability, and sense of community seem more interesting to talk about, to me, when evaluating whether a space is worthwhile to engage with. Raw numbers are boring.

I also really like the idea of GTS being the backbone.
