@trwnh yeah, “cites” and “quotes” are likely distinct. you could cite a source without quoting its contents, for example. but quoting probably implies citing, so a “quote post” is roughly “a post which cites one other post and includes part of the cited post.” with this definition, you could have a general citation framework, and let UIs treat single-citation posts as quote posts

i’d love a general citation framework too. would be nice to link to a list of sources without clogging a post body

@trwnh how would you model a citation in this framework? that is, if my post cites another post, would it get the “annotation of type cites” treatment, or the “myPost cites otherPost” treatment?

@trwnh by this logic, shouldn’t we replace inReplyTo=otherPost with context=otherPost & a tag to signify that the current post is a reply?

@trwnh is the relationship between a thing i wrote and another thing to which it’s related not a function of my intentions? like, if i “boost” a post, without any other context, that act has a pretty limited meaning; it’s essentially broadcasting. but if i “endorse” a post, the act of endorsing rather than simply boosting conveys a distinct relationship between my action and that post; it’s distinct because endorsement means something very specific

@trwnh maybe we have different ideas of semantics. for me, specifying an addressee 100% changes the meaning of an utterance. if i yell “fire” at a rifleman, it means something different than yelling “fire” in a crowded theater. the meaning isn’t just the replied/quoted post plus my post; it also includes the relation my audience has to my post. more broadly: meaning is a function of how an audience relates to an utterance, so signaling the audience and intended relationship changes the meaning

@trwnh for me, a reply is intended mainly for the person whose post i’m replying to (e.g. this reply is me answering your question for your benefit), whereas a quote is intended mainly for my followers (e.g. quoting a good point and elaborating on it, so that i can spread that point to people who follow me but not OP)
