@Sheril I'd either go back and stick with physics this time (I did about half a physics undergrad then started taking more mechanical engineering classes), or do something in ecology. Maybe I wouldn't have hated school so much if I were studying some sort of Appalachian ecosystem.

If you had the time to go back to school to study any field at no cost, what would you choose? -
@bdatlrides it was great meeting you earlier!@edd @bdatlrides I think we're all in the same boat there (on the same train?), so no worries!

@bdatlrides it was great meeting you earlier!@bdatlrides it was great meeting you earlier! As mentioned, you and @edd may want to have a chat as well at some point! Both of you are working on Atlanta mapping things and may have ideas for each other or places where you could integrate the route planning you're working on or what not.

That last episode of Star Trek Discovery was *really* fucking good.@katanova I think I should probably watch it again before responding to any of this, because I really didn't think it was something super debatable, it felt super aggressive and out of character to me. That being said, my definition is broadly the same except for "for the purpose of control". I mean, that's bad, but it's still bad to impose your worldview or ideology for any reason and I'd still call that colonialism.

I bought a bicycle for the first time in like 15 years and I LOVES it. There is a very large and punishing hill between home and work but Iām hopeful I will be able to work my way up to commuting by bike someday soon #cycling #bicycle@ZenobiaVayne congrats! I love a Marin but don't see them often here on the eastern side of the country for whatever reason. If you're around on Fridays at 4PM Pacific time (or whenever, not everyone does it live), we have a Q&A style thing all about bikes over on the #BikeNite hash tag! You can ping @ascentale with any questions you'd like answered using the hashtag #BikeNitePQ and he'll add them to the queue! Enjoy your new ride!

Call for questions: it is #BikeNite this Friday at 4pm Pacific time!@ascentale also:
You've had a long day in the saddle and it's time to setup camp. What is your favorite dinner to make in the back country on a bicycle tour?

Call for questions: it is #BikeNite this Friday at 4pm Pacific time!@ascentale I can't remember if this has been asked before, but:
Do you have any bicycle related podcasts to recommend?

That last episode of Star Trek Discovery was *really* fucking good.@katanova oh I'm not worried about revealing themselves; sure, that seems like the right call in the context and is more or less consistent on how the prime directive is a judgement call in the rest of them. I mean when she's talking to the priest or whomever at the end and is effectively like "you should be doing science and working towards having better technology" (at least, that's how it came off to me).

That last episode of Star Trek Discovery was *really* fucking good.@katanova I haven't seen today's episode yet, but was it just me or did Michael do a colonialism to the pre-warp culture in the last episode and then they just kind of brushed it under the rug by having her say "I mean, your gods could be real too, but our way is right"? I'm a little hit or miss on this season so far. Looks gorgeous as always, but the video-gamey plot isn't really doing it for me.

I was traveling this weekend and omitted Q1 when scheduling #BikeNite - my apologies!@ascentale I'm honestly not sure; I can probably always help as long as I know a few days in advance, but my schedule is a bit up in the air right now. I think my Friday nights will remain free, however.

I was traveling this weekend and omitted Q1 when scheduling #BikeNite - my apologies!@ascentale I'm happy to help if you're away for a week and want to pass off the question asking duties so you don't have to plan it out in advance; I'm sure we could find a couple of folks too so that we always have someone available if people are traveling or busy.
As for the answer: I'm near-Atlanta, as always. This week has alternating between sunny and rainy days, but generally speaking it doesn't affect my riding. If it's raining I pull on some rain gear and keep going!

I want to change my pedals for better ones, but they're stuck.@CloudyMrs I've had good luck using toe straps or hook&loop to fix the other crank arm to the chain stays so that I can get my full weight on the pedal wrench without having to hold the other crank in place.

I wonder if anyone would buy an Odoo plugin for bike shop work order and inventory management?@Delib I don't remember that; cool! I'll have to look them up!

I think it's time for an ellijay.social mastodon/hometown instance.@ajroach42 I'd really like to see some sort of social media software that focuses on local. Not just "you can create an instance with the locale in the name" like with mastodon/hometown, but something more like Nextdoor (except maybe designed not not just be all nimby's all the time) where it specifically gives you methods of controlling who can see your posts based on locale. I don't really know what this would look like, but I think about sitting down to plan it out all the time.

Community participation:@meganL it's been years since I've done any #photography, but I used to *love* #KEH back when I was doing more of it.
-
Community participation:@SamUpstate @meganL I was excited to discover recently that you can get "commercial" TV's at B&H, ie. cheaper because it doesn't have a lot of stupid "smart" TV stuff to show you ads and go out of date within a year or two. It's literally the only place I've found where you can just get a "dumb" panel without buying in bulk.
-
Community participation:@meganL @DemonHusky @esnyder I'm not sure, it doesn't have a brand but I doubt that's one of the things they make in house and I don't know anyone else making bicycles for warehouses and the like, so probably?
-
Community participation:@DemonHusky @esnyder @meganL (they also sell some weird stuff you wouldn't expect like these awesome factory-floor cargo-trikes: https://www.mcmaster.com/products/tricycles/ )

Community participation:@DemonHusky @esnyder @meganL +1 for McMaster-Carr. I live near one of their facilities so I can just drive out there to pick up anything I order. It used to be that "shipping" was some guy from the factory showing up in his personal car on his way home from work with your stuff in the trunk. They do normal shipping with UPS or whomever these days, but it was always fun. Also if you ask sometimes they'll custom make some of the things they do in house if they don't have the measurements you need.
