@Edent We haven’t had anything genuinely new and interesting and “good” in the industry for a while (https://frabjousdei.net/post/182977984596/industry-malaise) but the only thing I turned out to be wrong about was deep learning. I’m using LLMs and training transformer models to help humans do meaningful tasks for my day job. It’s great, it’s exciting, the industry is moving so fast. There’s excitement and joy at the meetups. There’s absolutely a “there” there, and it’s the biggest change in the industry since mobile.

Have I reached the Douglas Adams Inflection point (or is modern tech just a bit rubbish)? https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2022/09/have-i-reached-the-douglas-adams-inflection-point-or-is-modern-tech-just-a-bit-rubbish/ -
Exciting news! You can now buy machines to create synthetic diamonds on AliBaba.https://arstechnica.com/science/2024/09/you-can-buy-a-diamond-making-machine-for-200000-on-alibaba/@Edent I didn’t anticipate the twist, but I don’t think it’s particularly realistic. The thing preventing widespread urban terrost attacks is that most people aren’t psychopaths, not the limited availability of covert and/or destructive weapons.

I have a sincere question about #Ethereum.@Edent When you transferred money between bank accounts, *somebody* paid for it. They have servers, they have staff writing software for and maintaining those servers, that all costs money. It came from somewhere, they just didn’t explicitly tell you where. If you found out where, you might not like it. The gas fee is explicit and up-front and you can decide if that fee and its consequences are worth it to you.
