@mms good ol' Kodi?
@evan how long are you staying in Berlin?
And an encrypted messenger
@silverpill but IPNS still relies on DNS, no?
ENS *could* be used, but I don't see how one could practically use it without relying on trusted entities. I used it already to point to email addresses, Twitter and even IPFS files, but how feasible would it really be to update to an IP address whenever my server responding to the corresponding actor ID changes?
@silverpill perhaps things like ENS itself?
@silverpill can you think of a practical example? At first I thought of things like torrent files and magnet links, but I am not sure you can change the content of the URI.
Yeah, no one really "owns" their phone number, but in most cases the same could be said about domain names: they are resources that are controlled by highly regulated entities and that need to be able to operate globally.
One of the things that bug me about ActivityPub is that actor ids must be dereferenceable. IOW, you can only fully "own" your identity if you have control over the domain name.
So, here is an insane idea: what if we could use https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_number_mapping to give one valid domain name for every active phone number, which can then be used by the number owner to create ENS-style records?
This would let everyone to set up, e.g, their AP id based on their phone number.
So, #nba season starting and absolutely not a single post all day? Who do I need to follow?
Definitely! I'm traveling this weekend, but I would gladly hop on a call next week.
Yeah! I have it deployed at https://fediverser.network and https://portal.alien.top.
I'm also working on a fork of Voyager to allow people to login and/or find a lemmy instance simply by authenticating with Reddit, but honestly I'm struggling a bit with its React codebase. It would be great to have someone else working with another client to make sure that my implementation on fediverser doesn't get too attached to one implementation.
Congrats on the launch! Would you be interested in integrating it with https://fediverser.io? I'm sure this would help increase adoption significantly.
According to the rules the domains will be online for at least 5 more years, and even then is that a guaranteed decision?
The .su domain still exists despite the Soviet Union being dissolved decades ago.
@Alien_Sunset @stefan @deadsuperhero
This certainly exists and a lowlight of the general culture here, but completely orthogonal to the "people are not getting access to the Fediverse because they cannot afford it and there is no one providing access for free to them" problem.
@Alien_Sunset @stefan @deadsuperhero
Okay, but if this support network is so crucial and the work it is doing is so viable, *surely* it will get enough people to fund it?
How is this disabled person *today* getting access to the Fediverse? Why do you think that making the costs explicit would automatically get rid of charities/sponsors/generous people?
It seems like we are talking about the same thing, but you have a preconceived notion that one entity should be able to answer for all?
@Alien_Sunset @stefan @deadsuperhero
We could be here forever talking about how none of these problems would exist if we had systems that avoided concentration of power and capital, but can we go back to focus on the "how do we make this sustainable and universally accessible?" specific issue?
@Alien_Sunset @stefan @deadsuperhero
I am not "leaving to the small governments". I am saying the larger bulk of the problem would be solved by making costs explicit and to let a *healthy market* emerge, where you can have individual service providers and independent consumers.
The "local governments" idea only came up as ONE possible alternative to account for the case where you argued that "paywalling would leave people behind". They would handle exceptional cases, not the core system.
@Alien_Sunset @stefan @deadsuperhero
It is still better than the status quo.
