If very white me can attract angry white supremacists like this for trying to do a little (gasp!) affirmative action, I can only imagine what it’s like for Black and Brown people who come here talking about the racism they experience in their daily lives and trying to find community here. It’s no surprise most of these racists coming into my mentions come from mastodon.social. I am tempted to block the whole instance, but I know most people start there because the sign-up process is biased in favor of the Gorgon’s unmoderated cesspool.

Just blocking people who come into my mentions to accuse me a “racism” for wanting to help Black or Brown folks get ahead in the narrow world of manga translation. These are clearly people who follow the kind of hashtags I used specifically to harass anyone who isn’t a white supremacist.

Since the white supremacist police came along to accuse me of committing a crime, and was not interested in clarification, let me clarify for everyone else. I am not hiring anyone. A publisher asked me for recommendations for a translator. To the best of my knowledge, I am not legally obliged to be “color blind” in any recommendation that I, as an independent individual, make to a company that will no doubt be looking for recommendations from various people and make their selection in accordance with any relevant laws.

Very white Mastodon is the wrong place to ask this, but since it’s my only social media… I am (again) looking for a #Black or #Brown woman, preferably queer, who can translate Japanese and would like some work #translating #Japanese. This is a really interesting project that has the potential to be nominated for an award, and the pay is better than you would find at most publishers of translated #manga. This is a historical manga and you will need N1-ish level of (reading) fluency. (That doesn't mean you have to have taken the JLPT—I never have!)
