There used to be a very good reason why things needed to go thunk, to go tktktktktk. -
PSA for whatever threat model you may have (IE domestic abuse): Google Chrome now has an opt-in Microsoft Recall-like AI feature where every page you visit is scraped locally (and also submitted to Google's servers) for you to be able to search through...Is this a feature I can see being useful? yes, assuming it's not spitting everything back at you via a LLM.
Is this a feature I can see being abused? also yes, in the same way we're all uncomfortable with Recall.
Is this a feature I feel comfortable using myself? no! I don't want the pages I visit being fed back to a google server! I also sometimes view pages I don't want to be scraped and stored locally for security reasons! (IE banking)

Easily toggled via browser settings, no clue what on-disc storage looks like.

The supervisor at Best Buy in Santa Cruz went on a rant about China backdooring products, claiming Lenovo laptops are backdoored as well as DJI drones. Something like ⅓ of the laptops there are Lenovo.@aud "their disgusting backdoors" vs "our free-range software bugs"

reading reviews for Assassin's Creed: Mirage, which has apparently been billed as a "return to roots" sorta thing and people are like "boring and repetitive" and I'm like my dude, you clearly did not play the original Assassin's Creed sounds about ac...@aud was talking with someone recently about how they tried to play Far Cry 3 because it's got so much hype and how boring it is now, and I was like "yeah what made it good was that ubisoft nailed the ubisoft formula with it. if you go back and play it now I'm sure it's going to feel very generic and boring"

(god I remember how much 2 rocked when it released. Doubt it's aged well with the ubisoft formula though)

I remember proposing using GIMP to do a task it would have actually been well-suited for to my high school teacher like a million years ago@aud what annoys me too is when someone also point out its ablest, and people who's only exposure to the word is via Pulp Fiction come back with a "no its not, its just a hehe funny word"
meanwhile I grew up that rural lifestyle with farmers that used it in reference to injured animals and people, and I'm like... no guys I'm pretty sure its not just that

I remember proposing using GIMP to do a task it would have actually been well-suited for to my high school teacher like a million years ago@researchfairy I'm working with a company right now where they won't let it be installed on any machines due to the name. We're having to fallback on Paint.NET for any editing work

It's hard to describe, but there is like a specific tonal quality that gunshots have that distinguishes them from fireworks.@rgegriff me when I moved from the countryside to the city
