Well, I'm actually still in a hotel room as I want for a landlord to approve me, but we're getting there.

I was blown up in Afghanistan in '03 and honorably discharged about a year later... Unfortunately, there was a government administrative error, and I was only honorably discharged. Not medically retired/disabled, as was supposed to happen. I had/still have quite a bit of shrapnel in me and a couple little medical quirks from my close encounter.

Anyway, long story short, I have reeeeaaally struggled since getting out and dealing with the process of getting a record fix. I was an infantry Sergeant for the 82nd Airborne and unfortunately not very skilled in the real-world, which is why I turned to internet marketing years ago from the public library and McDonald's wifi. Off and on homeless, really stuck in this pit that I just couldn't get out of, or would for a brief time, and then something else would fail and kick me back, like my car dying. God that was a b*tch.

So in December I received a nice retroactive payment for my retirement/disability monthly check, dating back to '04, and now receive the monthly support I have really needed to at least get back on my feet and into a position where I am supporting myself, and more importantly, my daughter.

So life has improved immensely. I was able to buy a car, a cheap and reliable one. After years of having almost nothing, I'm quite the cheapskate now. It has overall been a good learning experience and I value the perspective it has given me.

Only problem I am having now is finding housing. In the last seven years since being discharged, I've unfortunately had two evictions, and landlord are of course extremely wary of that. VA has really came together with letters of support the last week for me to help with the application process, basically explaining what happened, why the circumstances that caused those evictions don't exist for me any longer, etc.

Feel really lucky. Haven't really talked about it anywhere, to anyone, other than those closest to me...like my Mom and my daughter's Mom, haha. Bored/restless/insomnia at 4am in this hotel room, kinda figured I'd just share where no one really knows who the heck I am. I don't know why and hope it doesn't come across as bragging about a financial windfall (is that the term?). Believe me, after housing/credit report/daughter's savings, there isn't much more than average left. But it's a world of weight gone.

I have been away, busy moving ugh, but I would like to use NodeBB for my community site at NE1UP. I have a couple problems. I need a technical-minded person to get me set up. Preferably someone who might like to work on building a fun forum together based on this software. That's first. I would be willing to pay for the dev team/person to, or an involved/adept community member. Preferably someone who wouldn't mind being on call - if anything goes wrong, um, I'm more marketing guy.

I actually have no other problem. I wanted to say, I like the idea @kevin had and would be willing to pay and help offset the cost since I too think that would be great for the community, also possibly my own site.

I would also be interested in helping out with any other really desired/cool plugins or even themes anyone might suggest in the future.

PS, am writing this in Firefox, and the box or some sort've blue rectangle to the right of 'upload images by dragging and dropping them' is only showing the bottom half.

Oooh, I had to drag and resize the box I was typing in, the 'reply' was mostly hidden. I'm not sure if I did that accidentally without noticing it or if it started that way.

EDIT: Oh, it's the 'reply' box that's visible underneath this box I am typing on, I clicked it to get here. Looks weird half-hidden like that, I now understand it's a layer below but still a little weird placement once this box comes up..

What is that 'homepage' coded with? I unfortunately am only barely-qualified to touch HTML/CSS But I can break things like crazy for weeks on the road to getting it looking like something you'd have to pay for.

That's definitely not NodeBB on the homepage of the site. That is an old imageboard I'm going to retire soon to replace with NodeBB.

Oh right, I meant the index of NodeBB, the page with all the category boxes.

Your homepage is super interesting also though - I had looked at several message board options for speediness but in the end, eh.. Best I could find was some variant of 4chan or something.

Just thought I'd share for those of you looking for cheap hosting or a .com deal. Seems to be set at 60% standard for the holidays but jumps to 75% off for an hour at a time every couple/few hours.

Right? I love @trevor's work. NodeBB team is definitely giving us an incredible platform to work on and start from.

The owner is super nice and his forum is incredible. I am sure the devs have seen it and know the gentleman in charge but thought someone else might not have seen it. I love clicking around, everything from the front portal to the threads is really well executed. The footer bar is interesting too.

Just a thought: a few times I have been reading through a longer thread, seen someone I wanted to reply specifically to, and so I clicked the reply button next to their specific thread post. I kinda feel like that should trigger an @mention of that person or a post quotation - probably preferably a mention.

I do like the reply button next to each post, makes it easy to engage users, but seems like it's missing the other half of the functionality to me.

Just curious how the SEO of NodeBB and saw this slightly older post and was curious if you all ever cracked this nut, or if Discourse did. They did have an interesting explanation of how SEO worked for them on Discourse and I am about to Google search for some things on this message board, curious to see how everything all shows up.

Curious what people are doing for searching within the forums. There are some great, auto-suggest options/themes out there and I feel like a good search would be great with this.

Also, Discourse has this really cool reply-to-topic via email feature, when you're receiving email notifications of posts you have replied to? It's super convenient. Maybe not so great for web site hits, but I love it.

Just two thoughts. I have a ton. I don't want to sound too critical of something I'm actually loving. I don't know 100% if I can make it work for what I'd planned...but it's still such a pretty option.
