I think whenever a democracy allows an anti-democratic candidate to run for office, it has already lost.
It should be very simple:
- I'm going to be a dictator on day one!
- Sorry, sir, but your candidacy has been revoked. You may try again next time after apologizing to your voters and paying a significant fine.
I think non-Hebrew speakers should be aware of the extremely transphobic nature of the Hebrew Wikipedia.
It is a matter of policy there to mention every trans person's deadname, even when there's no information at all associated with that name. They also write things like "born as a male" / "born as a female" which is a very misguided way of saying "assigned female/male at birth".
And we are all "in power" somehow. Different social intersections place us differently wrt privilege/power/oppression. When it's an intersection where I'm oppressed, I have to remember to direct my criticism towards the oppressive structure, not the individuals. When it's one where I'm privileged, I have to remember to listen with empathy and not conflate individual tensions with political power imbalances.
We all deserve rights and our society is full of injustice.
Those in power don't want to think of themselves as oppressors, as the "bad guys". The mere existence of the oppressed evokes discomfort. "Wait, have I somehow contributed to their suffering? No... Surely I can find some fault in one of them to prove that I'm actually the good one."
I find this to be one of the early signs of people getting radicalized to the right. It almost always starts with minor isolated grievances against the oppressed. Recently I've seen it happening a lot with trans issues.
