@foone it’s so you can use an off the shelf SRAM instead of a monolithic Dallas zero power RAM, but those existed when this card was made!

The need for an option ROM is obviated by an initializer program on the reference disk. Instead of a Track 0 initializer, it uploads the program to an SRAM on the card.
Unfortunately it only does that once because the funky socket the 6116 is in is a goddamn Dallas battery backup built into a DIP socket.
