p.s. If you don't do this, people may end up blocking your server entirely just to stop the spam.
It's really not much work to approve signups. It's a lot less work than dealing with spammers on your server and the staining of your server's reputation.
Fedi admins, please switch off instant signups! 
If you allow instant signups, you are opening your server to spammers and causing huge headaches for hundreds of other server admins who all have to block the spammer that has taken up residency on your server.
The latest wave of spammers are *all* on servers that have instant signups. Please switch them off!

The site for my other account @FediFollows is at https://fedi.directory, it's an old-style web directory but for Fediverse accounts.
The current version is built on independently-hosted WordPress software, but can't help feeling like there might be a better fit with other software?
I can't do it static as it needs the search function. Also can't install/update software manually, it needs to be managed hosting.
Any ideas?
