We mostly just trash talk the people still on twitter — but wait! ... it's more fun than it sounds. 
Instead of algorithms, we use hashtags. A good start is to post an intro that includes the "introduction" hashtag, plus a more for stuff you're into.
You can follow hashtags directly, which is a good way to find people to follow, who share your interests.
There's a @FediTips guy that's good to follow; pretty sure they have a website, too.
#BlackMastodon might be good for more tips.
Mostly, be patient. There's a hundred different cultures and stuff crossing paths in here, and no obvious "Start Here" button.
