I think about John Roberts along similar lines. How did a well-educated man who grew up with modest privilege decide to make dismantling the Voting Rights Act his life work?

@inthehands @fawfulfan I remember in 2000 the reverse of what happened was possible: Gore winning the EC but losing the PV. This post from Michael Podhorzer includes a useful graph showing the swings in EC bias.
