5 years of Do Not Stare!

Hey ho! As of today (2024-11-13), our little instance has been running for 5 years!!

We started donotsta.re together with @lnl after my previous instance (niu.moe, may it rest in peace) announced that it will be shutting down. We originally envisioned it as a comfy place for us two. Starting on a 4PLN/mo (~1EUR) arubacloud VPS, we later moved it onto sakamoto, my home server, where it went through a couple hardware upgrades. At one point we almost lost the database in a hardware crash. Clearly learning from our mistakes, we almost lost the database again a couple months later. Both times, the rescue missions included manually reading the data structures, and once I literally whipped out a hex editor to fixup a file.

Creatures came and went, friendships were made, wars were fought (ccn please federate with us again, xoxo donotsta.re). All in all, I’m really happy to have created a place for such a wonderful and diverse community. I wish for another n+1 years for the instance, and more peaceful ones at that.

@easrng @lanodan well, then they’re violating the URL spec. while the urlencoding is defined very broadly (mayhaps a bit too broadly), the parameters are defined quite strictly: ? to begin, = to separate rhs and lhs, & to separate further indices

but same can be said for ; which genuinely has no right needing to be urlencoded imho
