Second question: I’d like to know your thoughts. Do answer honestly and present factual information. What reasons do devs and designers have for coming to the #fediverse #mastodon ? Again, do keep in mind we aren’t only discussing white devs but people from all kinds of backgrounds and cultures. #askfedi #fedi

@anubis2814 @denebeim @jdp23 you are on the right track but for most people a list of questions wouldn’t work and would be a deterrent@anubis2814 @denebeim @jdp23 you are on the right track but for most people a list of questions wouldn’t work and would be a deterrent

@anubis2814 @[email protected] @jdp23 @damon that works sorta.@denebeim @anubis2814 @jdp23 An instance is central control. The only recourse is running your own or joining someone else’s which you’re under their control

I’d like to know your thoughts.@Blort There was a sex worker friendly instance that got taken down. Pretty sure it was Switter. Also, people can do on Discord, Facebook groups, Reddit what you just stated

Republicans are freaking out about their extremist candidate in North Carolina after news reports that he's a bit kinky in his private life.@ramones do you have an article with this? -

What reasons do potential users have for coming to the #fediverse #mastodon ?
Keep in mind we aren’t only discussing white users but people from all kinds of backgrounds and cultures. People that have strong reasons to remain on Big Social -
I just sent the final proofs of the #ActivityPub book to the editors at O'Reilly.@everton137 you can take a look at these https://atproto.com/guides/faq#why-not-use-activitypub https://fed.brid.gy/docs#compare

Warum?Wir sind hier alle im #Fediverse, wir sind nicht "auf Mastodon".Das Netzwerk ist und heisst #Fediverse.Warum ist das so schwierig zu verstehen?@Hiker @jupiter_rowland why does it? When the fediverse effectively is Mastodon. It makes up 70% of the software and about the same if not more in total users
-
Idk who needs to read this but it’s okay for people to like different things and make different choices than you.@everton137 The issue then becomes an ideology. What constitutes as “open”? Many fediverse users don’t want open nor interoperability. The Fediverse is effectively a gated community.

@anubis2814 @damon I get the impression that you're technical.@denebeim @anubis2814 It’s not about what’s simply technically possible. Your comment disregards and disrespects peoples experiences. People have the ability to not use social media, to use keyword filters, blocks, mutes, domain blocks and other platforms outside of Mastodon. Does that negate their negative experiences? Also, while allow lists have their benefits there’s no mechanisms that allow people to know when new servers come online that they’d probably like to connect with. Also, you bring up allow list what would be the benefit of that to people that are used to Big Social and having their content & work be able to spread far?

@anubis2814@anubis2814 Honestly, Bluesky started out to be a good platform for POC particularly Black women. They dropped the ball by not planning accordingly in terms of moderation. I don't think a better one exists at the moment thus they all just remain on Facebook & Twitter.
I think it starts by including Black and Brown folks in the discussions, finding Black and Brown Devs/designers. What makes it rough is that Lemmy and Mastodon have reputations that travel and people are aware of them. Mastodon subsculture specifically has rubbed people the wrong way. To be honest they're just fine without Black and Brown folks, the ones they would want would have to capitulate.
Look up Black Twitter and tell me if it meshes with fedi/mastodon culture
I do appreciate you asking, as that's also a part of how me make this space better. -
Idk who needs to read this but it’s okay for people to like different things and make different choices than you.@ch0ccyra1n That is how it should be. To me there should be interoperability between the popular social protocols that is what should be the "town square" not one specific platform, protocol nor app. If your friend is using a Bluesky app they should be able to engage without without issue while you both use the apps & platform you prefer -
Many of you think the #Fediverse is the best online social experience ever and that’s your right. Many of you think the #Fediverse is the best online social experience ever and that’s your right. I don’t agree particularly when it comes to Mastodon. Black and Brown folks have been chased out of this space, one of the largest minority ran instances essentially forced to shut down and much more. Then you get white folks in peoples mentions telling Black and Brown folks to digitally segregate themselves as if that’s an acceptable response. -
Idk who needs to read this but it’s okay for people to like different things and make different choices than you.@damon
People not using #Mastodon is okay it’s not the perfect solution for everyone. That doesn’t mean Mastodon isn’t really good. I remember trying it in 2020/21 and thinking no one will ever use this, my friends will never use this. I was happy to be wrong about the first part. It’s gotten much better and will only improve but that doesn’t mean it nor the #Fediverse is suited for everyone and that’s okay -
Idk who needs to read this but it’s okay for people to like different things and make different choices than you.Idk who needs to read this but it’s okay for people to like different things and make different choices than you. It’s okay to have valid constructive criticism as well. Fandoms can be insane, I’ve seen it with PlayStation v Xbox, Android v iOS and so forth. People can like what they like and if that’s a different choice than you that’s okay.
I say this as people on #Fediverse get highly upset at any level of criticism of #Mastodon and other platforms. People getting upset at other protocols. #ActivityPub is amazing but it’s not perfect, nothing is and that’s okay. We live in a world where we have these big beautiful brains where we invent and come up with things. I like to celebrate that.
People making different choices than you would is good. People have many layered reasons as to why they do and don’t do things. -
Sometimes, I find myself feeling burnt out about the #Fediverse. -
Sometimes, I find myself feeling burnt out about the #Fediverse.@freakazoid I’m honestly embarrassed there’s people like you on the fedi and I’m glad there’s spaces where people that don’t think like you are far as hell away from you and anyone like you
-
Sometimes, I find myself feeling burnt out about the #Fediverse.@everton137 @deadsuperhero why is that even a question? ActivityPub isn’t the end all be all. Do you know how many protocols we have literally due to ideologies or something as trivial as missing a feature or two? What about coding languages that don’t deviate much from one another? It’s weird you and others want a lack of innovation and creativity. Screw having options

My take on the discontinuation of mozilla.social is that it was a good idea that was underfunded and underdeveloped.@fabrice @gabrielesvelto @laurenshof @dale You’re making that statement to someone that reports on Blue sky. Even if you deduct that amount it’s still several million larger than the desk in MAU. Those same users could’ve went to mastodon yet only a few thousand chose to
