I didn't really appreciate the line about a fish not knowing its in water till I did a side by side study of Chinese language (HK and TW) coverage of COVID vs English (Toronto Star and Globe and Mail).
I didn't realize how much Toronto media centered every narrative around oil and money. Meanwhile HK and TW newspapers actually talked about health, death, and the pandemic like people's lives mattered.
The media coverage I discovered extends to today. When waste water signals are high, go shopping! When hurricanes are coming, buy something!
Our media is so hyper focused on money it has rotted our brains.
