Here's a concept that I wanted to work on for an upcoming forum I am working on. Sadly I doubt I'll have time, but wanted to at least show it here for inspiration for anyone who's interested.

I generally like the look and feel of NodeBB but I wanted something a little more dark but also modern (which usually doesn't go hand in hand) for this theme. There's nothing special really in this theme in terms of added functionality.

It has the basic categories and their description. The avatars are the users who've posted there most recently. I had an idea that when you mouseover their avatar it would give a little snippet of what they said, and give the option to view user or view their post specifically.

Other than that, it's pretty basic. Thought I'd share.

I've only been using it for a day or so, but the one template was already so close to a website design that I was using that it required minimal modifications.

It's very rare you can see something new in the forum space that calls itself minimal but then doesn't compromise on almost everything that makes a forum a forum (I'm looking at you moot). I love what you guys have done here and I can't wait to see it progress.

On a side note, I've got to be the first World of Warcraft raiding guild that is running anything based on node.js. Cause that's just how fucking hardcore we are.

Keep it up guys - proving that once again everything that comes out of Canada is kick ass.

I think it may be better to leave the e-mail threshold up the user. Let them choose if they're e-mailed every time something happens, every time xx amount of things happen, or daily, weekly, etc. Though it would be nice for a "priority" mode so if you send a message or chat to someone it will definitely fire them an email as some users may not check forums every day when someone is trying to get ahold of them for one reason or another. Something worth thinking about maybe.

If someone posts an image, it just shows nothing. I'd prefer it either have it not show their post at all or show a little thumbnail of the image they posted.

If someone chats you and you haven't viewed it yet, would be cool to have it flash in the title bar in case you're in another tab. Back and forth between Chat from User and the actual title of the page you're on.

Of the free control panels the ones worth using have already been mentioned. Webmin/Virtualmin - these guys are pretty good about fixing security flaws.

VestaCP for the most part is secure (even when you compare it to the big paid panels) - there is a known exploit with its backup system and how it works, though I won't disclose it here. Only really a concern if you're planning on hosting other people on it.

I've spent a decent amount of time with Ajenti and AjentiV. Since it is not really meant to be given out to other people to use it's more for you to use personally that negates a lot of the security concerns you get into with web panels (mainly other people gaining root access). I'm using Ajenti on a couple of projects just to test it, and it's a nice little panel.

With anything I run on servers that do not need external user access I normally only open the port that the specific panel uses to my external IP address only.
