@inthehands @darkuncle Well, a Gen 1 iPhone had no AppStore and no way of installing software beyond the carefully coordinated set of Apple apps. Non-Apple software was limited to web apps. In retrospect, perhaps Steve Jobs was right.

After years and years of media reports that coal is having a comeback in the UK the last coal plant will go offline in just 2 weeks.@grob @janrosenow Comparing that with the energy mix in Germany, it looks like the UK had access to more and cheaper dirty methane (AKA “natural gas”) from their North Sea wells and were able to replace coal with that more quickly than Germany. Those wells, by the way, are leaking tonnes of methane into the atmosphere.

After years and years of media reports that coal is having a comeback in the UK the last coal plant will go offline in just 2 weeks.@grob @janrosenow Looks like the initial reduction was due to replacing it with nuclear and methane (“natural” gas) in the 1970s, and since 1995 it has been driven by wind power and other renewables.

I agree with this thread for the most part.@polotek I’ll be retired in a week, and I hope that makes many things easier. Thanks for the kind response, and I hope your struggles are successful.

Well, now that we can do video, it means this video can be posted here, which apparently started over on the other site. Noah Garfinkel noticed that Trump's claim about eating cats and dogs fits with the Peanuts theme song & then someone made a longer ...@mmasnick.bsky.social @mike Is the bridge two-way? In other words, can you see this comment on blusky? Or is it one way like the threads.net bridge?

I agree with this thread for the most part.@polotek I don’t have a problem with thoughtful rebukes. As described in the pinned post, my brain doesn’t work as well as it used to and I frequently find myself saying things that are less than helpful. If I have the spoons to look into this at some point, I’ll come back and share with you what I find out. But in the meantime, I’d rather not have incomplete stuff hanging out there. Which is why I am quick to delete when I realize the topic is really deserving of more thought than O can give it at the moment.

I agree with this thread for the most part.@polotek Offending reply deleted.

Kind of annoyed by this "Trump fell for fake internet theory" stuff.@mastodonmigration Trump doesn’t distinguish between true and false. The only two categories he cares about are “Helps Donald Trump” and “Doesn’t help Donald Trump.”

psyched by the the news that @bnewbold (protocol engineer at Bluesky) is planning a talk at @fediforum (a fediverse web conference) with the following frame:* collaboration and coordination with atproto and other protocols* interoperable identity syste...@liaizon @thenexusofprivacy @bnewbold @fediforum 10 to 1 the real topic will be: “Why Fediverse developers need to start using Bluesky’s proprietary protocols instead of the Fediverse’s free as in speech protocols.”

It's September 5th!@paul @Janne_O @mekkaokereke The USA is 50 individual states with a federal government that has limited powers (the biggest perhaps being national sovereignty in foreign relations). In terms of things like voting, you need to compare the USA to the EU, not an individual nation-state like Germany.
Is this a smart way to handle voting? Absolutely not. But unless we rewrite our entire constitution with a constitutional convention or a bunch of constitutional amendments, that’s the system we have.

Of these four achievements, which would you want most for your child?@evan Then why did you ask which I would want most for my child? Maybe this is one of those trick questions where allistic people know they are supposed to intuit the context or subtext and “read between the lines.”
Seriously, if you meant to ask a question about the nature of the occupations, why did you instead directly ask us a question about our aspirations for our children’s achievements?
-
Of these four achievements, which would you want most for your child?@evan Skipping the question this time as I want for my offspring whatever makes them most fulfilled.

I’m guessing there must be people out there who both have the necessary skills and time, and would love to help @dansup build Pixelfed.I’m guessing there must be people out there who both have the necessary skills and time, and would love to help @dansup build Pixelfed. "What’s been really striking this year is that while traditionally deep distrust of the mainstream press has long been the province of right-wing Republicans, now it’s liberals who once cheered for the media to do better who seem to be giving up on them."@wdlindsy @mastodonmigration The answer to why we don’t trust billionaire-owned media conglomerates is that they killed or ate all of our local media sources, and instead cater to the whims and desires of their oligarch overlords. It is really that simple.

As political journalists relentlessly refuse to notice Trump's ever-more-evident derangement and extremist plans, you can't chalk this up solely or even mostly to (willful) incompetence and corporate maneuvering.@rateexportpilot @mastodonmigration @dangillmor Thereby increasing the likelihood that they will end up in such a camp. The idea that being nice to a would-be dictator will somehow convince them not to jail you is naïve.

Canada: COVID-19 Hospitalizations at highest level since winter.@DenisCOVIDinfoguy @JeremyMallin @auscovid19 “Experts say COVID-19 is here to stay, but it hasn’t yet adopted the same seasonal pattern as common cold and flu viruses, both of which are more prevalent in winter.”
Let me edit that for you:
Experts say COVID-19 is here to stay. Unlike the seasonal pattern of the common cold and flu viruses, both of which are more prevalent in winter, the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 is transmitted year round.

Last week’s electricity generation in the UK had a record low carbon intensity of 58g/kWh. So far this year the carbon intensity has averaged 118g/kWh, representing a 76% reduction since I created https://grid.iamkate.com in 2012: -
Via Angry Staffer:@GottaLaff Vance is just saying out loud what we know to be true. The GOP wants women back in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant. They consider it a mistake that women were ever “given” the vote, “allowed” to own property or get paid g#for their labor. They want to be able to enslave black and brown people again. They want Jews to be oppressed again. They want to exterminate anyone who isn’t a cisgender heterosexual. They think robber barons are a good idea. When they say “make America great again” they mean they want to go back to 1860.

I thought the Vice President responded to the protestors in Phoenix with respect.@knova @slcw @kamalaharrisforpresidentnews @timbray @NZedAUS The way you get a campaign to do something is to work with them, not against them. The protesters are cutting off their own noses to spite their faces.
You want a statement? Draft one and work with the campaign to polish it into a mutually agreeable form, then bring all your people out to cheer and support Harris on as she gives the statement to the world.
Don’t use Trump’s own technique of assuming everyone else is your enemy and the way to prevail is through conflict. That’s not how the real human world works. Yelling at people and accusing them of being war criminals has never convinced anyone to work with the active shouter.
