In the BBC this morning there is a modestly transphobic article regarding the trans youth charity, Mermaids. In the BBC this morning there is a modestly transphobic article regarding the trans youth charity, Mermaids.
The charity has broadly been cleared by the regulator in that it has not been found to have broken any rules when offering services, however, it was found to have been mismanaged during a period of rapid growth.
That said, Mermaids has stopped offering chest binders, and has also been instructed that should it offer them in the future then all parents of young people must be informed. This of course can put some trans youth at risk if they have transphobic family.
Further, Mermaids have essentially been forced to put statements upon their website that are in accordance with the Cass Report regarding things such as puberty blockers and other treatments, which is problematic given the non scientific and highly flawed nature of the Cass review, which has been roundly criticised internationally.
I won't put a link to the BBC article here as it does use transphobic language which I have stripped from my summary.
