It's interesting how the rhetoric around #AI shifts around and now companies are using phrases like "embrace #AI or face extinction".@abucci Absolutely...
Sigh, being well known as a techie this has been a frustrating time for me! People want to talk with me about "AI" , but they don't accept my educated opinions on it. Locking me into frustrating arguments.
I'm now wondering if the phrase "coercive misinformation justifying exploitation of humans & planet" will help me sidestep it...

It's interesting how the rhetoric around #AI shifts around and now companies are using phrases like "embrace #AI or face extinction".@abucci Yeah, ever since ChatGPT there was a widespread line "use AI or be left behind" which severely troubles me! But you're saying the language is escalating?

Is it considerate or is it passive aggressive to reply with alt text when the original poster neither wrote any nor asked for any?@kims I often get thank yous from the original poster when I do so!
And I think its the most considerate why to encourage good alt-text practices on the fediverse, the least likely to backfire!

HTML For People - Blake Watson:
https://htmlforpeople.com/I'd love to see how it works for the target audience, but as best as I can judge it looks like a great course!
I think Simple.CSS is a huge aid here. And interesting that it (eventually) teaches the infamous PHP, in a way that makes it seem appealing to me.

The government of the United States is like a long-running legacy computer system.@jalefkowit You're reminding me of a similar joke for the British:
"What does this 'Monarch' piece do?"
"Nothing anymore, but everything's tied into it so we're afraid to remove it." -
I've been so much time mourning the death of what I saw as the future of computing back in the microcomputer and early PC era, and blaming capitalism, Google, Apple, and the FOSS movement, that I hadn't actually considered the possibility that we'd alr...@freakazoid My attitude is that most of those sites break sooner or later, due to dependencies which don't take as much care.
I think I'll stop engaging: The DOM is the main standard I blame the sad state of modern browsers upon, & I am not interested in any vision which keeps it around! I wouldn't consider it a paradigm shift!
I started engaging before I knew where you were going.

Personally I'd rather not rely on faster hardware, I prefer faster software. And for apps like Hixie I reckon it'd be best to implement the rendering in-app inside the sandbox upon WebGPU & ARIA.
The DOM is an overly-complex API designed amongst hype misconstruing Java-like OOP as being universal. I'd like to give it up!

"I think my attitude to this stuff evolved after seeing that even with all the work we did with HTML, virtually nobody actually benefits from it."I disagree with his loss of faith, I don't think things are this dire. But I reckon him pursuing this alternate vision will improve HTML by splitting off the app web!
Its a decent vision for the app web...

I remember proposing using GIMP to do a task it would have actually been well-suited for to my high school teacher like a million years ago@aud @researchfairy I used it to paint this mask onto my avatar here!

Some things which both the FSF & OSI didn't include in the definition of opensource:Some things which both the FSF & OSI didn't include in the definition of opensource:
1. That FOSS must cost nothing.
2. That FOSS must publish our code online. That said these are fairly natural consequences these ideals with off-the-shelf software, aiming for a broad audience.
I think its only that these are excluded from the official definitions: The Four Freedoms apply to those who run the software, which doesn't need to be everyone!

Everybody keeps talking about post quantum encryption. We should also be talking about post AI web browsing.@jerry My strategy: Webfeeds, & being more strategic about my search engine use. Knowing SearchMySite, DDG, Stract, & Wikipedia's strengths & weaknesses.
It's serving me well for now!

Over the next ~week I'll discuss implementing it in our hypothetical hardware-communicator!
And since we're talking about supporting Bittorrent in this OS, I'd be tempted to use it for software updates!
The UI would be exposed via the downloads status-icon I described yesterday.

to be clear, stallman has repeatedly shown that he's not a capable steward of software projects (everything that happened to hurd and gcc), and even less capable as a leader of an organization@tef Instead what do we get from RMS staying on & cultivating that cult of personality?
A crowd who shouts "How dare you fork GIMP!?" (to give an example) when the whole point is essentially the right to fork!

Anyone got any suggestions for a free/cheap solution for hosting an art portfolio and blog?@eclectic I was going to offer you some spare web-accessible diskspace I've got, but that doesn't address the cost of domain names...
