Part of being maintainer is to decide what should and should not be part of the software. Every extra thing makes maintenance harder, and provides extra room for bugs to hide. If you feel obligated to accept any feature that someone wants you'll easily end up with an unmaintainable mess. It's totally fair to say "nope, this shouldn't be here". If you want to be nice to people who want features you don't want to maintain/support, offer a stable API for extensions.
