The margins aren't very big, and the NDP is going to have an easier time in a byelection, where voters can stick it to the government, without fear of ending up with an undesirable government.

The primary beneficiaries of childcare are not the children, but the parents. When you look at other, more important issues like compulsory school attendance or corporal punishment, they're silent, if not supporters. Whenever children's rights means limiting someone else's authority, they stop. -

Also high up on that list is children. The NDP have talked a good deal about advancing children's rights, but they don't use their power to advance them.
